The Power of Innovative Pedagogy: Engaging At-Risk Youth and Reducing Violence

Hello everyone, I’m Scott L. Steward, the founder and CEO of Genius Lab, Inc., a passionate advocate for innovative pedagogy and a seasoned entrepreneur who kick-started his journey at the tender age of 12. With a Master’s degree in Integrated Marketing Communications and Business from Roosevelt University, I have dedicated my professional life to leveraging my skills and experience to foster a transformative educational environment for at-risk and struggling students.
Why is this important? It is crucial because we have been witnessing an escalating crisis of disengagement and violence, particularly among our Black youth. Education is a powerful tool that can not only shape the minds of these young individuals but can also help dismantle the systemic issues that often lead to their disengagement and susceptibility to violence. The need for innovative, engaging, and practical education methodologies is more significant than ever.
Drawing from my experience in entrepreneurship and corporate marketing, I’ve developed the I.D.A.R. (Introduce, Discuss, Apply, Reflect) pedagogy, a transformative educational model designed to engage students in the learning process actively. With a focus on practical knowledge, interactive learning, and reflection, the I.D.A.R. pedagogy seeks to make learning relevant, enjoyable, and meaningful for every student.
The genius of this model lies in its ability to engage students who might otherwise feel disinterested or disengaged in the traditional classroom setting. The I.D.A.R. pedagogy creates an environment where students can explore their interests, experience learning in real-world contexts, and reflect on their learning journey.
At Genius Lab, we have seen the transformative power of the I.D.A.R. pedagogy firsthand. Our former students, like “J Gill” and “Knuckles,” exemplify this transformation. J Gill, a successful real estate broker today, and Knuckles, a former gang member turned entrepreneur, have both attributed their personal and professional development to their experiences at Genius Lab.
As educators, we must recognize the immense potential these struggling and at-risk students possess. We must foster environments that respect and nurture their unique abilities. We have to create learning spaces that don’t stifle their curiosity but, instead, encourage it.
The impact of our work is demonstrated through the 98% student participation rate achieved within one school year, the creation of 331 jobs by Genius Lab alumni across various industries, the positive impact on over 31 global communities, and transforming over 3,000 “geniuses”.
The key takeaway is this: when we commit to understanding, engaging, and nurturing the minds of our youth, we not only make education more enjoyable for them but we also contribute to the reduction of violence and reengagement of these young individuals in appreciating the value of quality education. The work we do at Genius Lab isn’t just about imparting knowledge, it’s about reshaping lives and crafting a better future for our students and our communities.
Remember, education is a right, not a privilege. Let’s strive to make it accessible, engaging, and transformative for all students, regardless of their backgrounds or circumstances.
Stay tuned for more insights into our work at Genius Lab, the I.D.A.R. pedagogy, and our collective effort to transform education for a brighter future.
