Youngest of three, Professional parents, Pressure to learn, Loved books, Disliked people, Adored Physics, Mathematics a tool, Chemistry for bangs, History fascinating, Geography beguiling, English like vegetables, Forced to eat.

Loved making things, Lathe in bedroom, Metal shavings, Machine oil smell, Parents thought, Engineer material, School re-organised, Physics and Maths, Engineering aimed, English last, No history, No geography, Missed them.

English, Mechanical lessons, Teaching literacy to, Functionally illiterate, Uncooperative student, Forms of poetry, Not love of poetry.

Research Engineer, Good title, People talk, “John’s a bit weird…”, “He’s a research engineer”, “Oh… I understand”, Hide behind smile, Played role for, All its worth.

English became, Report writing tool, Critical Thinking, Objective and, Unbiassed, Factual precise, Detailed analysis, Careful explanations, No emotions, No jokes, Certainly no irony, Dry as sawdust, Interesting as compost.
