The Mythic Muse Marketplace

The Pirate Queen

A Secret Identity

My Pirate Queen pictured here on the Starboard Beam, I’m sailing with Pirate Dave and Lady Jane Blackwing (image by author)

So I think I already told you that one of my secret identities is that of the Pirate Queen. This is my chosen career, that of a mythical pirate. Pirates are known for their rule-breaking hi-jinx on the high seas, usually smuggling contraband into seaports. Famous pirate heists include buried treasures, maps marked with Xs, and dire warnings in the shape of a skull and crossbones.

A lawless history of pillaging and plundering is why most people discard pirating as a career path. I hope you know me well enough by now to know that I’m not interested in the pillaging and plundering. But I still feel the calling to be a pirate.

Pirates live on the edges of the maps that have this legend:

Here be Dragons.

Dragons guard treasure. And treasure is what we are seeking. We are charting a course between the known world of the five senses and the invisible realm of creative ideas. Sailing our Pirate Ships at those edges of the map where the Dragons guard their pearls of wisdom and golden ideas, we navigate these dangerous waters seeking that lightning bolt of inspiration.

When it strikes, everything is illuminated. And we suddenly are charged with this inspiration that needs to be carried to the Marketplace.

This voyage through the Sea of Creativity to Marketplace Port will take piratical courage and resourcefulness and all of our creative think-outside-the-boxing. To actively engage with these uncharted waters and turn them into a shipping itinerary that sees us from these invisible waters to the Marketplace.

Yes, I am a badass pirate. But I want some glamour with my badassery. Thus I am the Pirate Queen. And my Ship is currently the Member Ship. I am smuggling these invisible ideas out of the Invisible World and making my way to the Marketplace.

(For clarity, the invisible realms are generally happy for us to move their invisible ideas into physical reality. What guards the checkpoints between the invisible and visible are Sea Monsters that want to keep the story the same. It’s a thing we will talk about more in our Monster Moon of October, but I just want to clarify the resistance to bringing your invisible idea into visible reality ISN’T coming from the invisible world… usually.)

Back to our pirate tale.

I think about the Pirate Queen character I am becoming. The future Pirate Queen Me who is right now successfully berthing her Member Ship at the Marketplace, a bustling place filled with people and treasure in equal measure. We are all gathered to barter and share.

How has my Muse changed me? Making and marketing this Member Ship?

Time to get out my Secret Character Cards. Let’s see, Raven Witch… The Time Traveler… the Pirate Queen, here she is:

She dresses the part. Layered skirts and stompy boots, and a mane of flaming red hair. She seems to be wearing bells, and a sparkling choker. And a really big and blingy pirate skull ring.

She spends her creation time in her Treetop Crows Nest, collaborating with her Member Ship Muse and her Timekeeping Pirate Crew, the cycles and seasons.

She is courageous in her abilities to collaborate with the invisible realms.

She keeps her Pirate Queen logs each day, and has published a Muse to the Market guidebook and map. The other members of her Pirate Crew are game developers, artists, and designers who materialize the ideas she chronicles every day from that Crows Nest.

She is courageous in her collaborations with the visible realms; teaming up, shipping to the Marketplace, heralding her Muse, and Treasure Trading.

When not plotting the course and crafting treasures, she spends her days at the Secret Bookshop. This secret hideout and headquarters has undergone a transformation as well. The Oregon Shakespeare Festival prop crew descended upon it and turned it into a bookstore of magic, mystery, and meaning. It has become the place for Storyspinners to safely gather to Write the World.

And the Writing of the World has begun in earnest. There are Muse to the Marketplace Pirate Pods and Back to Wizard School Spellcasting Pods. Weekly Time Travel Chickens (the chicken is a check-in.)

Each Moon we open a new Secret Book chapter. October is Monsters. November is the Treasure Bazaar and December is Gnomes as we prepare to launch out into the world in the-new-year-that-will-be.

These are the daily Daring Doings of my Pirate Queen.

It is a role that serves me well, and gives me the courage to boldly sail to those edges where the Dragons be.

Sail with me. Let’s bring our Muses to the Marketplace this month. The world needs them. Let’s Write the World.
