The Picnic

Poetry (Prompt — Observation and Imagination)

Photo by Willian Justen de Vasconcellos on Unsplash

In the warmth of the summer rain

Unexpected yet perfect

Her face poaches,

A slow egg, softening

In the absolute necessity

Of surrender

My own, a dirigible

Floating back and forth

Caught in the swoon

Of her happiness

Tracking her joy

With my beam

No words came to dampen our ground

We had swept them away

Beneath a juniper tree

In a far-flung field

Then we ate sandwiches
