5 WAYS TO COPE: In the FACE of ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE
IF YOU CAN’T BEAT ’EM, JOIN ‘EM.
Artificial Intelligence refers to a computer’s ability to learn from large amounts of data and subsequently mimic human responses.
I am fascinated with AI the same way I am fascinated with a gigantic train coming my way. I can see that the track is not copacetic up ahead.
The reason for this fascination is that trains do serve us in many useful ways. They are enormous, loud, and intimidating. We can write about them. We can write about all of the wonderful ways they make our lives easier. We can write about the narrowly missed wreck that we prevented because we caught a problem just in time. We can write about the different ways we see impending catastrophe coming our way. And we can even write about the smaller train wrecks that have already wreaked havoc on other people’s lives.
The subject of AI (artificial intelligence) is one that will in the future, if not already, affect every single one of us in one way or another. There will be no escaping the affects of change in our society, or even in the world.
I know some people might not be into ‘tech’ type subjects. They may not have enough interest in technology to educate themselves on the newest thing. If thats ‘just not your thing’, I get it. But, I do believe it is of dire importance for the future of humans in general, that we each educate ourselves on AI, and what it is capable of.
The reason I stress this is that the entities that rule this world, and make decisions for all of us, are educating themselves. We may not know what to do with our knowledge presently, but wouldn’t you agree that more knowledge is beneficial in making a decision on the next course of action?
In discussing AI with friends this is an argument I have been faced with, “What good will it do for us to educate ourselves on it? We can’t change it, or stop it”.
I realize that we may not be able to stop the train wreck, but we can watch for where it will be, and try to get out of the damn way.
I am absolutely NOT saying that we should be afraid. I know there are many people who are afraid. But keep in mind, except for the initial fear to alert one to a problem, fear will just get in the way of critical thinking skills that would have helped deduce solutions.
Recently I have heard a wide range of concerns related to how AI is already affecting our lives, and how far it will go.
One of the most prominent, is the concern related to AI replacing humans in the job market.
Here are some concerns people have about AI taking over human jobs:
- JOB LOSS: As AI technology advances, it could replace many human workers, leading to significant job losses in various sectors.
- ECONOMIC INEQUALITY: The displacement of human workers by AI could lead to greater income inequality, with those who own or control AI technology benefiting disproportionately.
- LACK OF TRAINING AND EDUCATION: Many workers may not have necessary skills to transition to new jobs or careers if their jobs are replaced by AI.
- BIAS AND DISCRIMINATION: AI systems can perpetuate biases and discrimination against certain groups, such as women or minorities.
- SAFETY CONCERNS: As AI technology becomes more widespread, there is a risk of accidents and errors that could harm humans or damage property.
- LOSS OF HUMAN TOUCH: Some jobs, such as customer service, require human interaction and empathy, which AI may not be able to replicate.
Additional concerns would include, but not limited to the following.
- PRIVACY: AI systems can collect and analyze vast amounts of data about individuals, potentially compromising their privacy and security.
- DEPENDENCE ON TECHNOLOGY: There is a risk of people becoming too dependent on AI and technology, leading to a loss of critical thinking skills and self-sufficiency.
- DISRUPTION OF SOCIAL NORMS: The use of AI could disrupt social norms and relationships, including changes in how people interact with one another.
- CYBERSECURITY: As AI becomes more widespread, there is a risk of increased cyber attacks and hacking attempts on AI systems, which could have serious consequences for individuals or organizations.
- AUTONOMOUS DECISION MAKING: As AI advances, it may make decisions without human oversight, which could lead to undesirable consequences and ethical issues.
- ETHICAL CONSIDERATIONS: Many ethical questions can be raised concerning the use of AI. Issues would include transparency, and accountability. Such as who is responsible for decisions made by AI systems and how could they be held accountable?
I would like to conclude on a positive note by sharing some ideas for coping with what is clearly here to stay.
- EMBRACE AI: Recognize AI for the positive tool that it can be. It is a tool that can benefit humans in various ways, such as automated repetitive tasks and analyzing data.
- DEVELOP AI SKILLS: Invest in developing your AI skills. Become more proficient.
- COLLABORATE WITH AI: Use AI to provide accuracy and data analysis.
- BE VOCAL WITH YOUR CONCERNS ABOUT AI: Help to implement transparency and accountablility by voicing concerns to leaders. Push to ensure ethical and responsible use of AI.
- CONTINUE TO LEARN: Promoting further education on the latest developments and advancements in AI. Adapt and innovate accordingly.
