The “Perfect Time” Is A Myth.

If you’re anything like me, you like being in control of most areas of your life. Or at least feeling like you are in control. When it comes to new ideas or sudden interests, I’m typically 100mph right out of the gate. I’m usually up late at night in bed playing out the best possible outcomes or scenarios in my head, wondering how I can get things started as soon as possible and live a completely different life. I’m making a list of everything I would need in order to begin.

Then something happens.

And it’s usually not right in that moment.

A couple of days will go by and that same passion I had going 100mph drops drastically to like 75mph then 50mph, 40mph, and before long I’m not far from the starting block, engine off, sitting left wondering what happened.

As I’ve reflected over instances like this in the past I’ve noticed a crippling habit I’ve developed both consciously and subconsciously: the theme of thinking there will be a perfect time for me to go after whatever ideas or interests or any opportunities I may have.

I once heard someone say;

“The richest place in the world is a graveyard. So many unexecuted ideas, unfulfilled dreams, and undeveloped potential”.

It’s a sobering thought to think about. I wonder how many of those people in their graves thought that they were still in control and were waiting for the perfect time to begin.

You see the truth of the matter is we are not in as much control of our lives as we like to believe. There are so many outside circumstances at play that even on your best day things can change in the snap of a finger. So many people(myself included) live life thinking they can control all the circumstances and “if I just get this much money in my bank account” or “if I just get this much skill in an area” or “if I just make it to this stage of life” THEN I can begin that idea I had.

That’s B.S.

I understand there is wisdom in timing don’t get me wrong. A wise person isn’t going to attach their name to a huge business loan if they have $0 in the bank or commit to a triathlon when they haven’t put in the time of training. I also know a lot of times in my life I’ve used “wisdom” to masquerade what is really fear. Me afraid that if I start that idea it might not turn out the way I think it will, or I might fail. Afraid that others may look at me and laugh.

However, I’ve noticed that more times than not I have what I need in order to begin. Or I have relationships with people that do. There are some ideas and dreams you are given that are cultivated over a lifetime, and there are a lot more where you are able to begin right away. All it takes is a little bit of effort and giving up the notion that you are in control of the perfect time…because it ain’t out there.

Much Love
