Measuring your fitness success

The last time I fought to get in shape, I weighed myself daily and after every workout. Each day I waited for the number on the scale to go down. But it never did. Being the determined person I am, I did not give up, but I did increase the time I worked out. Still nothing, my weight remained the same. I didn’t abandon my fitness plan, but I did stop waiting for my fitness goals to come to fruition. Waiting can quickly turn into a waste of time.

Having a supportive community or encouraging friends helps us continue moving forward in everything we do. So, instead of waiting for my results to arrive, I began meeting new people in the gym. Before long, three people would notice if I wasn’t there and encourage me to return to workouts. They knew that showing up was more than half the battle.

After three months of having fun with my new community of fitness enthusiasts and making healthy choices, I reached my fitness goal. I felt great! I threw my scale away. It was not an accurate measure of my fitness success. Friends that I could count on, a positive outlook, and my smiling face are what mattered the most. They were all unexpected gifts that were easier and more fulfilling to maintain. Obsessing over an arbitrary number on the scale no longer took the lead — my health and happiness did.

As I take the leap to correct the isolating, sedentary lifestyle imposed by covid, I’m holding on to my past experiences and three essential truths:

  1. Pursuing fitness or any other goals without support is a mistake. An excellent place to start is Meetup.com. Seek out exercise groups, walking partners, or an organization that supports your goals. They will provide encouragement, insight, and resources to help you stay focused.
  2. Decide if your goal is short or long-term. I made the mistake of setting a short-term goal without planning how to sustain the results. Goals should be realistic, well designed, and sustainable.
  3. Long-term results will not happen overnight. They require consistency and a lifestyle change. The only way to get and stay in shape is to include healthy choices in your daily life. Try reading Food for Life: Delicious & Healthy Comfort Food From My Table to Yours by Laila Ali.

Conclusion

Getting in shape for the summer is a good idea. However, getting in shape for the rest of your life is better.
