The Perfect Age

I used to worry about age for as long as I can remember.

Well, to be precise, I believe I was 22 when I started to worry about being old.

I remember back then I was wishing I had been 19. It didn’t stop at that. Once I turned 25, I wished I had been 23. When I finally hit 26, I hoped I was still 24. So it went on and on. I was never satisfied with my current age.

I figured out this kind of worrying does nothing but prevent you from enjoying your current self. My 22-year-old self should just have focused on having fun, whatever fun a 22-year-old would usually do, instead of lamenting about not being 19. I was 22! That was so young. What it is that I was worried about? When you look back, it really looks silly.

Since last year, I have decided to put a stop to this constant dissatisfaction toward age. I remember someone told me once that he didn’t like the thought of approaching 30. Despite it did sound scary, I really didn’t want to entertain such thought anymore.

I was 27 when I started feeling comfortable and even thankful for my age.

At the time I felt like I was the most beautiful in my life. To this day I still often look at my reflection on the mirror and think that I never looked better, not even compared to when I was younger.

It’s because I finally understood my body. I began to eat better. I figured out which skincare products that actually work for me — after years of trial and error. The persistent acne problem I had since a teenager was finally gone. Those baby fat on my face began to disappear too, as a result, my jaw became more defined (I used to look so “round”). There’s also an additional source of glow: I was in love.

What I like the most is my state of mind — where I was emotionally. The older I get, the more I know what I want and the less I give shits to unimportant things. Especially the part of giving less shits, it is very liberating. I finally knew how to say no and put boundaries. It’s really awesome.

Oh, and did I mention that I was in love. I met someone, and he helped to lay out a blueprint of what is it that I want in a partner. This time it felt like a real, mature thing. It made me reflect a lot and rethink my priorities. In this case, I could say I was having the best time. The best revelation.

At 27, for the first time, I felt like I was at the perfect age.

I want to continue this mindset moving forward. No matter your age right now, it should be the perfect one.

Getting older does introduce new challenges, whether it’s biology-related or just with life in general. However, each age comes with its own gifts. This gift is called maturity, wisdom, and experience — and the best one, less f given.

I admit that there is still an occasion when I wish I were younger. For example, when I wish I had started something earlier, like investing. But I tried to stop whenever it looks like it’s going to be a counterproductive worry. Besides, in the case of investing, it’s never too late to be financially savvier, anyway.

So, enjoy whatever your age is you are at now. Not only because the age won’t come twice, but it’s also because worrying about it also looks really silly from the perspective of your future, older self. Instead of worrying, just do your best to live the present.
