For any writer who’s just started their online writing journey, the number one question on their mind is: “How and where do I get started writing online? What’s the safest and less risky way to get your feet wet in the online world?

Getting into online writing entails a certain level of risk. That’s why the best and perhaps the safest way to do it is by building your side hustle while you’re working at your normal day job.

If you don’t have a job at the moment, then, of course, you can invest more time into your business. The more time you have available, the more time you can invest into your business.

One crucial mistake to avoid at all costs is blindly rushing into your side hustle like a maniac. With online writing, you first have to learn how to walk before you leap. Taking baby steps but doing it consistently will be a more prudent approach.

Doing it slowly will also ensure you don’t put too much pressure on yourself. You don’t want to quit a few months into your journey, either.

For example, if you’re a parent, have a job, you may already be living a busy lifestyle. Adding a side hustle when you have too many things on your plate may result in burnout.

But does it mean you can’t build a side hustle of your dreams and work from the comfort of your home?

Of course not. Many people have done it, and so can you.

The trick is to take your side hustle seriously and work on it one step at a time. Do it at your own pace. Whatever works with your schedule. Taking baby steps is fine.

For example, as a busy homeschooling parent, I tackle my writing projects slowly, and I’ve set up realistic writing goals for myself. This is so that I avoid burnout and stick to it in the long run. And you can do the same.

Figure out how you can work writing into your schedule, and plan out each day accordingly. It may take some trial and error to figure out how much time you’re willing to spend working towards your goals.

Everyone has a different schedule, depending on their job, family obligations, etc. Freelance writing gives you the freedom to do what you love and earn as much or as little money as you want. The choice is yours.

Building a side hustle of your dreams

There are plenty of successful writers out there who’ve juggled their jobs and their families while building a side hustle of their dreams. Building a side hustle doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice your family time or your well-being.

It’s all about finding the balance and figuring out what works best for you.

However, this doesn’t mean you won’t be making some sacrifices along the way. After all, building a freelance writing career is not an easy journey. It does require time, patience, and commitment. If you have a job and a family, for example, you may have to give up certain things to set aside time to put into a side hustle.

But imagine the payoff once you’ve realized your dream and acquired your freedom? The immense level of satisfaction at doing what you love the most? Sitting in the comfort of your home or office. Or maybe even becoming a digital nomad one day and sipping your margaritas at the beach?

Sign me up for this lifestyle.

Freelance writing can be a rewarding and fulfilling way to make living and have the freedom to do what you love. And the good news is the future for content creation is bright.

Currently, there is a huge demand for ALL types of writers. That means it’s never too late to take a leap of faith and start building the life you desire.

So, yes, if you’re thinking about breaking into freelance writing, there’s no better time than now.

There is no right or wrong way

You may be scratching your head and thinking: What’s the best way to get started in the online writing world?

The truth is, there is no right or wrong way. Every writer chooses their own unique path — the path that’s good for them. What may work for you may not work for another person, and vice versa.

The road you take depends on your interests, your goals, and your life situation. The best way to learn is to walk the path of other writers who’re on a similar journey as you are and who share your common goals and interests.

You can read about their success stories, their triumphs, and their failures. You can learn from their mistakes.

Not only can you learn from these writers’ experiences and mistakes they’ve made, but you can also find support and encouragement from people who are walking the same path as you.

Because let’s face it: Trodding on the writing path can be lonely and daunting. You need to feel supported in your journey. Networking with other creatives like you can only help you succeed.

The takeaway

Anyone can build a successful writing side hustle of their dreams. But to be successful requires grit, patience, and determination.

No matter how busy you are, whether you have a job or raising a family, you can build it slowly. Adapting the right mindset is crucial for success. Taking baby steps but doing it consistently will help you stay on your path and reach success.
