Maintaining patience and consistent effort to work toward our goals can be challenging in a world that values quick results and instant gratification.

We live in a world of get-rich-quick schemes, and we’ve become conditioned to believe that we can get whatever we desire immediately without having to wait or work hard for it.

I have observed this desire to reach our final goal without following the required steps or processes in myself. I started writing on Medium in 2021 and put in several hours of work every day. However, this approach became unsustainable because I also had a full-time job. This difficulty in managing both led me to eventually stop writing on Medium.

I was pursuing my goal of becoming a writer like a sprinter, with a sense of urgency and putting in a lot of effort quickly. However, becoming a successful writer is more like a marathon; it demands endurance and the ability to sustain effort over an extended period.

The process of achieving our goals is similar to climbing a mountain. To reach the peak, we have to take one step at a time and concentrate on the next best step we can take.

In other words, success in reaching our goals doesn’t happen all at once; it’s a gradual journey where we make progress by focusing on each small, manageable step one after the other. Just like a mountain climber doesn’t jump to the summit but ascends methodically, we work towards our goals by steadily moving forward, step by step.

Below are some tips for maintaining patience and consistent effort to work toward our goals:

Identify your goal. What do you want to achieve? Once you know your goal, you can start to break it down into smaller, more manageable steps.

Choose one habit. What is one small thing you can do each day to move closer to your goal? For example, if your goal is to write a book, you might choose to write for 30 minutes each day.

I have improved my consistency as a writer by setting a clear, easy-to-measure, and attainable goal: to publish 100 blog posts on Medium. This specific target provided me with a clear sense of direction and progress and helped me become more reliable and regular in my writing efforts.

I allocate 30 minutes each day for writing, and within this time, I spend the first 10 minutes creating a rough draft. I dedicate the remaining 20 minutes to editing. This structured approach helps me remain consistent.

While spending just 30 minutes a day may not be sufficient to complete and publish a piece of writing daily, it is adequate to establish the crucial habit of writing regularly. My primary goal is not necessarily to produce finished work every day but to build the discipline and routine of writing. This habit-forming process is my priority, as it lays the foundation for future productivity and improvement in my writing skills.
