The Parting

A free verse poem.

No parental guidance manual can prepare you for the split-second moment that an offspring leaves for the first time.

Three in the morning, dark. The day I long dreaded had come. With the road to adventure before him, I rose and woke my son.

He said farewell to his mother, and tears flowed. Then, with his companion, we took the road.

A deer stag loomed large from the morning mist, magnificent and proud, as night drew back its cloak to reveal a dawn of great beauty.

Sunrise set the morning alight. Crosses in the sky marked London airport, Vapour trails of hope leading to who knows where.

This, is a moment in life when all is about to change. A surge of time crammed into a few short minutes.

No turning back. No regrets. Only hope, anticipation, and love. We parted in the airport lounge. Tears. Then they were gone.
