The Parenting Portal Newsletter: March 2024
A quick update, some practical stuff and a bit of rambling. OK, maybe more than a bit. What can I say, I’m in charge.
Welcome to the inaugural newsletter for The Parenting Portal. Here’s what you get this month.
- A quick apology/useful list
- February overview
- Current plans
- Pay it forward
- Boosts
1. A quick apology/useful list
First things first — I am really sorry about the mass tagging on this. This is a one-off; please don’t steam at me. It’s the only way to directly shout at all you writers right now.
So, the first order of business in this newsletter is how we keep in touch.
Ta-dah — we have a list.
When I publish a newsletter or need to update you/tell you something, I’ll put the article in this list. If you save the list, you’ll get an email and site notification that it has been updated. You can then take a look at what I’ve just published. I’m not going to spam you. You’ll get a monthly newsletter and the occasional urgent update.
No more mass tagging. Phew, that’s a relief.
If you don’t know how to save a list, read this:
Over the next few days, I’ll set up a tab on the Home Page for newsletters and updates so you can also see them there.
2. February overview
I only launched the publication this week so I’m not going in-depth here. We do have people coming in to read already — I’ll probably talk about stats in future newsletters.
We already have five articles in the publication which is great considering we’re new. Four of them are brilliant. One of them is mine. If you haven’t looked at the publication since you signed up, it’s worth a look.
Thanks to those of you who have published. I hope you all keep them coming :)
3. Current plans
I will be tweaking the publication over the coming weeks. I want to make it as useful for you as possible. I do NOT want this publication to just be a dead bookshelf like some other pubs on site.
The first thing I’ll do is add a Writer Resources section. This will contain links to some useful Medium Help articles. Over time, I’ll also add links to any other articles on publishing I see on site that you might find useful.
If anyone has any ideas on what they’d like to see in the future, then I’m open to suggestions.
4. Pay it forward
It’s really hard to create a community in a Medium publication. We can’t use a forum. But, we can come together with a little work.
It was really nice to see some of our writers read other articles as I published them this week. I’d like to encourage you all to do this when I publish one of your stories.
I’m not talking about manufactured engagement here. I’m talking about supporting fellow PP writers and making new connections. The people who write here are people you probably want to read. They probably want to read you.
Given how hard it is to find new people on the site who write decent stuff, it makes sense to look here. I can honestly say I have some of the best writers on Medium signed up to the publication. I want this to be a place where you can read really good stories and make friends.
You can obviously choose what you do. But, if I were you, I’d take a look at the home page when you have an article published. If an article catches your eye, read it and start a conversation with the writer. If we all do this, we all benefit over time. We can create a real community.
I’ll do what I can to promote your articles. I clap, highlight and comment on everything I publish. I won’t put your articles out unloved and lonely like so many other publications do. The rest is kind of down to you.
5. Boosts
I don’t have Boost privileges. But, one of our first articles was boosted this week. Some nominators roam and look in non-boosting pubs to find extra articles to boost. So, don’t assume that Boosters won’t see what you publish here.
Right, that’s it from me. If anyone ever has any questions or needs any help, comment on one of the site articles or DM me from one.
Thanks for signing up to write for The Parenting Portal. Oh, and save the list.
