The Panera Unlimited Coffee Subscription Is A Game Changer

I’ve always loved Panera’s soups and sandwiches, but I had never tried Panera coffee before this year. As a coffee lover and broke college student, I signed up right away when I heard about Panera’s coffee subscription.

For $8.99 a month, you can get “unlimited” coffee (there is a limit for one drink every two hours with refills on the same drink). This means that if you get coffee every day, each coffee costs you about 30 cents. This $8.99 price tag can be compared to about 4 cups of coffee if you buy them at the normal price without the subscription. The subscription does not apply to the specialty coffee drinks, but it does for light and dark roast, hazelnut, decaf, iced, and even tea.

Why I Love It

I’m going to be honest, I actually prefer Dunkin coffee over Panera coffee, but I only go to Panera for coffee now because of this subscription. With the prices of coffee at popular chains ranging between $2 to $5, buying a cup coffee daily adds up to an expensive habit. Personally, I always loved buying my coffee every morning, but there would always be a sense of guilt because I knew that I could save so much money by making my morning cup of coffee myself. This subscription eliminates that guilty feeling.

The subscription also allows for some customization. Since I’m lactose intolerant and trying to be healthier, I’ve become that person who always customizes their orders. I appreciate that Panera, even with the subscription, always puts almond milk in my iced coffee when I request it while I order. At my previous go-to coffee chain, Dunkin, adding almond milk cost me a couple of cents extra.

Is Panera Coffee Even Any Good?

I would describe Panera coffee as reliable but basic. I think it’s good but nothing super special. If you just looking for a reliable and good caffeine fix, you’ll be satisfied with Panera coffee. On the other hand, if you’re a coffee snob, Panera coffee probably won’t hit the spot. Their coffee is not as potent and strong as other chains like Starbucks, which I personally actually prefer.

Is It Too Good To Be True?

When I first heard about this coffee subscription, I thought it was too good to be true. How was it possible that a huge restaurant chain like Panera would do something so radical as to offer unlimited coffee for only $8.99 a month? The more I researched and thought about it, it made so much sense that I found myself starting to wonder why they nor any of their competitors have thought to do this earlier!

It’s simple. Panera was never known for its coffee to begin with. By starting this subscription service, they are getting more people to notice them and buy into it. First, they’re attracting coffee-lovers who weren’t regular Panera customers before. Then, they’re also targeting their regular customers too. Many Panera fans like me, no matter how devoted, still didn’t think to go to Panera when we want coffee…until this subscription service rolled out.

But even then, it’s still questionable on the surface-level and raises the question of how they make money by selling more coffee if they’re selling it at such a lower price? There are two main ways they can use this subscription to their advantage. First, they advertise that the coffee is unlimited and that if you get a cup a day, each cup comes out to 30 cents a day.

Yet, it’s highly probable that many people do not actually get a cup of coffee every two hours or even every day. Second, Panera is still a restaurant that focuses on its food — bread, sandwiches, soups, salads, and most importantly, pastries.

With this subscription service, they’re putting additional trust in their other products and predicting that when you pick up that 30 cent coffee that they’re not profiting much off of, you’ll also cave and pick up a muffin or a bagel.

Should I Get The Subscription?

If you drink coffee every day or close to it, I definitely recommend trying the Panera coffee subscription out. If you are used to buying coffee, you will save a lot of money. Even if you typically brew your own coffee, I still think that it’s worth trying out for convenience's sake.

Personally, I used to make coffee at home to save money but I do really just enjoy the routine of going to pick up my morning iced coffee. This subscription has helped me to not break the bank but also to maintain a fun part of my morning routine. As much as I love and want to recommend this subscription, I think that this subscription is not for you if you don’t get coffee often, if Panera locations are really out of the way, or if you for some reason just hate the taste of their coffee.
