The Other
From Hero To Zero

I am now not one of you, I am the other, the other too. I step onto the field, ready to play, Game on, game on, with a ball in tow, My pride and self-esteem on full display, But the crowd, oh the crowd, begins to glow.
Their eyes on me, like hawks on prey, A skilful show but a hostile display, My every move they seem to betray, And any mistake, they’re quick to slay.
All is amiss, oh, a mistake! Then the crowd boils beyond control, Taking it to heart, beating and aching, My soul cries out, searching for a goal.
Besieged by tongues, victimized by words, Spite spits out, still hurting, No longer one, just the other; it hurts, Why bother with this cruel thing? Then, the social media assault, Who knew you would continue your revolt?
This poem is about the experience of being an outsider in a group, specifically in the context of playing a game or sport. It describes feeling confident and ready to play but then facing hostility and criticism from the crowd watching.
They feel victimized by the words and actions of others and eventually give up on trying to fit in and be accepted. Then social media is used to continue the attack.
The poem touches on themes of identity, and acceptance! The Other!
