The One Thing That You Need To Be a Success on Medium That Nobody Talks About
It’s not followers.

For anyone who is interested in making money by writing on Medium, there is no shortage of resources to refer to for advice about the most effective way to strike it rich. There are classes, free webinars, books, coaching; if you want help, it is out there.
I have personally taken advantage of a lot of the help that is out there. Some of it is better than others, but I have found that you always learn something from every bit of information you consume.
This is my fifth month of writing on Medium. During this time, I’ve had the opportunity to see if what I learned from numerous books, courses, and webinars is valid for making money on Medium.
One thing that the Medium teachers address a lot is the debate between quality and quantity of writing. Some say that to make big money on Medium you need to publish every day. Others will tell you that you need to have a higher quality of writing, and you can publish less frequently. The experts seem to be split on this one.
In my experience so far, you want to have both quality and quantity, if possible. Think about it, if you churn out a bunch of stories and they are poor quality, no one will want to read what you wrote. On the other hand, if you write a high-quality story, it takes longer to write it, so there will be fewer stories available for people to read, and you will have a more difficult time gaining traction. But if you can write stories in both high quantity and high quality, that’s a win-win situation.
Of course, life isn’t ideal, so do the best you can with your current circumstances. You have to work with the skill level that you have right now.
Over time, your quality of writing will improve, as will your time management skills. Eventually, you will produce a higher quantity and a high quality of stories than when you started on Medium.
I have also been told that you need to have a magic number of followers to grow your readership. One of the resources I used said 3,000 is the magic number. A different one said that 10,000 is the magic number. That’s a huge range. I have been given a lot of conflicting information.
Based on my experience, no matter how many followers you have, they need to be followers who actually read your stories. If your followers aren’t engaged readers, having a bunch of them does you no good.
I would rather have ten followers who read what I post than 100 followers who pay no attention to what I write. In the case of followers, quality over quantity comes out the big winner for me.
There’s one ingredient in the recipe for Medium success that many of the teachers seem to gloss over or don’t address completely. That ingredient has to do with time. I like to break down Medium into weeks and years.
If you are a busy person who has very little time to write every week, it will likely be more challenging to excel on Medium. Having a regular time to devote to Medium weekly is a valuable resource. If you don’t have time available each week for Medium, you are at a disadvantage. The more frequently you can publish during the week, the better your odds are for advancing on Medium.
If you publish once every month or two, you are likely going to stagnate. Readers can’t rely on seeing your stories regularly, so it’s going to be difficult to establish a connection with them.
Finally, there is the long-term picture. If you are hoping to make some quick money on Medium, don’t waste your time. You are better off going to the casino or the pawnshop. Medium is all about the long game. Your success on Medium builds story by story. You might get a boost from a viral story here and there, but that can’t be relied on and is a rare occurrence for the vast majority of people.
Before forming a strong opinion about your ability to excel on Medium, I would make sure to put a full year into publishing on the platform at a rate of at least twice a week at a minimum. I don’t think that you can get an accurate feel for whether Medium is for you without putting in at least that much time.
Everything takes time. Especially Medium.
I am a very impatient person, but I’ve learned that if I want to play on Medium, I will have to learn to play by Medium’s rules.
Medium likes consistency over a significant time. I’m willing to make that commitment. I’ll keep you posted on how that works out.
So far, so good.
