The One Thing That Made Me More Productive

Two weeks have forever made me more efficient at my computer

It started as just a family challenge. I didn’t enjoy it at first. But now, two months after I committed two weeks to learn a new skill, I am so glad that I did, and would recommend this to anyone looking to become more efficient in tasks on a computer.

The skill that I mastered, is typing. Before the quarantine started, I was a mediocre typer. I didn’t have proper form, but for me, it was good enough. I didn’t do much work on my computer that required lots of typing, so the occasional essay for school was just that. An essay. Now, I see it as an opportunity to work on my typing.

The challenge that my family and I started was meant to make all of us better typers, but everyone, other than myself, dropped out after the first week. The reason being time. No one else wanted to commit fifteen to twenty minutes per day to typing. Just like with anything, practice makes perfect.

What I found, is that while I don’t type perfectly, taking free typing courses online made me a more efficient typer. I now find that I use all of my fingers when at the keyboard instead of my two pointer fingers. While ergonomically, maybe I’m not the most efficient typer, I’ve improved.

This is a skill that not only benefits me now, as I’m typing this post but in future endeavors as well. It will help me in school, it will help me in future jobs. It didn’t take that much effort, and I don’t think I can ever go back. My fingers just don’t know how to stop typing properly.
