The Ominous Dark Object Won’t Leave Him Alone

September Six Word Photo Story Challenge: “Shadows”

Why is this shadow following me?

I was watering my yard in unusual 90 degree heat. A futile attempt to keep my plants and shrubs alive a bit longer. It hasn’t rained in a month. The grass has turned yellow. Flowers have decided it’s time to quit.

Rusty ran around the backyard like something was chasing him. There was nothing there, not a stray dog or wild critter. I caught a possum in a Havaheart Trap yesterday. His wild eyes pleaded for help.

I talked calmly and gave reassuring pets behind his ears. He usually loves that. I checked his paws for any foreign object that might be there. He looked fine to me. I ignored him. I had work to do.

He moved on for a bit, refusing to lie on the ground. Rusty loves to roll in the grass.

“What was wrong with him?”

He froze every few minutes, beseeching me to help with glances in my direction. I felt I had a psycho dog on my hands. Had he seen a ghost? I stopped and put the hose down. There had to be a plausible reason for his strange behavior.

It had been overcast all morning. Now, the clouds shifted, letting bright sunlight through. Definite strong shadows accentuated the lawn. I noticed that wherever Rusty went, he had a dark companion. He couldn’t shake it off him. I don’t believe he had experienced this phenomenon before.

I chuckled at his dilemma. Poor baby, he reminded me of toddlers who discover their shadow for the first time. I picked Rusty up to distract him. Then I walked closer to the house. That area was in complete shadow. I put him down. His fearsome companion was gone.

Fortunately, the clouds gathered again. All sharp, distinct shadows vanished. I put him inside where he was safe.

Thank you, Mary Chang Story Writer, for this delightful September prompt: “Shadows”.
