The Old Man on the Street Corner

And his sign which no one read

Despite the summer heat the old man on the street corner was wearing a heavy winter coat as he held up a sign which read, The New Ice Age Is Coming!

As the van came to a stop at the intersection Suzy looked at the old man and all the people walking past him. The people all seemed oblivious of the man and his sign. None of them could even be bothered to look up from their smart phones long enough to see him or read his sign.

“Look at that stupid fool!” said the driver of the van. “I guess he never heard of global warming.”

Suzy leaned forward to the metal grating that separated the driver from the rest of the van, “Actually, science has shown that brief periods of global warming always precede ice ages.”

“Sit back in your seat Missy!” the driver shouted. “Science!” He spit on the floor of the van.

As the traffic light turned green the van began moving again and Suzy looked at the old man as he faded from view. She spoke to him in her mind, “Enjoy your freedom kind sir. Enjoy your peaceful protest. It won’t be long before even you will be arrested.”

Over the next few busy city blocks Suzy watched all the people on the sidewalks walking to and fro. Out of all those many people she only saw one person who did not have a smart phone in their hand or at their ear and that one person was an elderly white-haired woman using a walker.

Suzy missed her smart phone. They were a great way to organize mass protests. Unfortunately, they were also a great way for the authorities to keep tabs on protesters and organize their mass arrests.

The van turned on a side street and proceeded a few blocks to a large metal gate which slowly swung open allowing the van to enter the prison. The van stopped at an entrance to a building and the driver shut it down. The driver looked back at everyone in the van, “Okay, you scum. The joyride is over. Welcome home.”
