The Obituaries of January*
The Reverend Sally Marie Phillips…… April 30, 1946 — January 8, 2020

Parishioners and families throughout the South Annex neighborhood of Lefortsville are grieving the death of Reverend Sally Marie Phillips today. The Reverend passed away just after midnight from a heart attack having had surgery for another one she’d had six months ago.
Reverend Phillips served in her position at All Souls Episcopal Church for over fifteen years. She has been such a mainstay of the congregation that it will be a challenge for anyone who comes after her.
Reverend Phillips came to her vocation relatively late in life in spite of having been the daughter of missionaries. She lived with her parents and younger brother, David, in the Fujian Province of China until she was of school age. After that, she lived with relatives in Connecticut and saw her parents only during their short annual leave. Her brother joined her when he started school and went on to become a lawyer.
It wasn’t until after she had been a successful advertising executive for over twenty years that Sallie Marie Phillips went to seminary and embarked on her second career in the ministry.
While it’s true that the search committee at All Souls Episcopal Church had its concerns about bringing in the church’s first female reverend, especially one from such a non-traditional background, in time all agreed that Rev. Phillips was a treasure. She founded several support groups for parishioners who were facing illness or other difficulties and welcomed all 12 Step groups seeking meeting space, making sure to keep the monthly rents reasonable for them. During her tenure with All Souls, the congregation grew and the church became a beacon of hope for many lost and suffering people in our area.
Services for the Reverend Phillips will be held on Sunday, January 12 and all are welcome to celebrate the life of this dedicated and joyful servant of God.
