Jill Rivers…… December 17, 2007— January 22, 2020

Sgt. Derek Singleton made the sad announcement earlier today that Ms. Martine Rivers and her daughter Jill died in the multi-vehicle accident that took place just after midnight last night on I-80 just outside of Willis Point.

The accident was not weather-related. In fact, as of this writing, it’s not known what caused two tractor-trailers to jackknife and for one to cross the median into oncoming traffic. Ms. Rivers and her daughter are the only known fatalities at this time. Mr. Rivers was driving home from a weekend volleyball tournament upstate at the time and hers was the first vehicle to be impacted by the tractor-trailer crossing the median.

Jill Rivers was an avid athlete and a star on the Burtonville Bees, the volleyball team. She was in the seventh grade at Betsy Ross Middle School. Ms. Rivers was a consultant having left her full-time work at Three Lakes Hospital after the birth of the first of her three children. Jill was the youngest. Her older sister, Tammy, is a Senior at Vincent Lombardi High School and Allan, Jr. just began college at Rutgers University this year. Jill was well known in the community as an outgoing and energetic young woman. Ms. Rivers and Jill were on the road quite often for swim meets as well as volleyball tournaments.

Mr. Allan Rivers, owner of the Rivers’ Toyota dealership in Burtonville, is currently traveling for business but has been notified of this tragic event. He will be returning home to Burtonville immediately. In the meantime, his sister Louise is handling inquiries and making preliminary arrangements for the funeral.
