The family of Mrs. Anita Marie Ojefsky is sad to announce the death of their beloved grandmother, mother, sister, and aunt. Mrs. Ojefsky passed away peacefully at the Snyder Jenkins Home for Assisted Living in Oakdale this morning.

Mrs. Ojefsky, nee Kovačević, came to the United States as a teenager after World War II with her mother and older sisters from what is now Croatia. Her father disappeared during the war. Mrs. Ojefsky’s mother found work in the Hoover appliance factory in Springdale and the family quickly settled into the community. They all became active in St. Stanislav Orthodox Church where they also attended English language classes that were offered there for many years.

Although her older sisters also quickly found work and then husbands, Mrs. Ojefsky concentrated on her career in the library sciences. She earned her undergraduate and then advanced degrees at Illinois State University and worked for many years in several libraries in the Chicago area. This is where she met her husband-to-be, Mr. Joseph Ojefsky of Elmhurst, Illinois. They dated for several years before marrying in 1962. The wedding took place at St. Stanislav and the young couple moved back to this area to start their family.

Mr. Ojefsky was an accountant who loved dancing and was a member of the church choir at St. Stanislav. He and Mrs. Ojefsky had one son and two daughters. Their son, Mark, took over his father’s accounting firm and is the proud father of twin sons, Joseph and Ivan. Mrs. Ojefsky’s daughters both relocated, Carla to Chicago where she runs her own small publishing press and Simone to San Francisco where she married and is a yoga instructor. Mr. Ojefsky passed away five years ago at the age of 80 and is greatly missed by his family.

Once her children were in high school, Mrs. Ojefsky went back to work in the local library system and has been highly influential in bringing the system up to date in technology. She was one of the first in our area to own her own personal computer and made it her mission to update the library’s antiquated filing systems.

The children and grandchildren of Mrs. Ojefsky all came back to Springdale last August to celebrate her 82nd birthday at St. Stanislav. It was a grand event and many of Mrs. Ojefsky’s life-long friends were in attendance.

Services for Mrs. Ojefsky will be held next Thursday, January 16, and all are welcome to celebrate the rich life of our beloved Anita Marie Ojefsky.
