The Obituaries of January*
Dr. Samuel B. Bakker…… December 17, 1948— January 21, 2020

The Editorial Board of The Journal of Migratory Birds is sad to announce the death this morning of former Editor in Chief, Dr. Samuel B. Bakker.
Dr. Bakker passed away early this morning after a brief, difficult struggle with brain cancer. His brain tumor was only diagnosed nine weeks ago. His wife of twenty-nine years, Dr. Marion Bakker, stood by his side three weeks ago when he announced that he was stepping down from his position at the esteemed journal. He had served as Editor in Chief for nine years and had already decided to step down before his diagnosis.
Dr. Samuel B. Bakker grew up in the Netherlands where, early in his life, he developed a fascination with migratory birds and other wildlife. He read for his final exams at University College Maastricht in natural sciences and went on to work as a researcher in the field of migratory species of birds. He lived in Rotterdam for many years before emigrating to the UK where he headed an initiative to preserve flight routes for dark-bellied Brent geese and other migratory birds whose routes have been increasingly disrupted by light pollution as well as other obstacles. Dr. Bakker was a fierce advocate for the natural world, often putting himself into opposition to popular development projects.
When he testified against the building of an airfield near St. Ives, Cornwall, Dr. Bakker found himself inundated with hate mail and even threats of harm. This did not deter him and ultimately the airfield was not built.
Dr. Bakker is survived by his wife, Dr. Marion Bakker, a molecular biologist and their daughter, Ms. Tanya Bakker-Jordon. Services are to be held at St. Augustine’s Cathedral next Monday, January 27, 2020. The family requests that donations be made to the Migration Research Foundation in Dr. Bakker’s name.
