Summary

The article discusses the life lessons that can be learned from the NFL, particularly through the lens of urgency, desperation, and clarity, using examples like the New England Patriots under Tom Brady.

Abstract

The NFL playoffs serve as a metaphor for life's challenges, illustrating how urgency can lead to clarity and how desperation can paradoxically unleash freedom and improve performance. The author, a long-time NFL fan, reflects on how teams often find their best play when faced with the do-or-die situation of needing to score immediately to avoid losing. This sense of urgency is contrasted with the consistent preparation and execution of the New England Patriots during Tom Brady's tenure, which allowed them to maintain clarity without the need for last-minute desperation. Drawing from personal experience in Alcoholics Anonymous, the author emphasizes that people often only seek change when the consequences of not doing so become painfully clear. The article encourages readers to act on their insights and dreams without waiting for a crisis to force their hand, suggesting that desperation can be a powerful catalyst for action but should not be a prerequisite for clarity and purpose.

Opinions

  • Urgency often leads to heightened performance and clarity in critical moments, as seen in football teams that struggle most of the game but excel when they must score to win.
  • Desperation can act as a liberating force, sharpening focus and determination, both on the football field and in personal life challenges.
  • The New England Patriots' success during the Tom Brady era is attributed to exceptional preparation, which minimized the need for last-minute comebacks and maintained consistent performance.
  • People tend to procrastinate and avoid necessary changes until they reach a point of desperation, often leading to significant personal losses before taking action.
  • The author advocates for proactive pursuit of one's dreams and goals, rather than waiting for a crisis to provide the necessary clarity and motivation.

What You Can Learn From the NFL and Tom Brady

The NFL playoffs are here. I am a lifelong, rabid NFL fanatic. I am 44 now and have been watching since I was about ten — I can’t get enough of it. It wasn’t until I was well into my 30’s that I started seeing some of the amazing parallels it has with life.

Football can teach you all kinds of incredible lessons, even if you didn’t play. I never did. It doesn’t matter though — watch long enough and you’ll learn something.

  1. Urgency = Clarity

Countless times I’ve seen teams struggle to score the whole game, then when they absolutely have to, they march right down the field and get a Touchdown. Football games are 60 minutes long spanned over four quarters.

Why does it take a team 50 minutes to wake up and get its act together? One word: “Urgency.”

The consequences are finally crystal clear. There is clarity. If you don’t score — NOW — then you are going to lose. I’ll sit there and say to myself why in the hell haven’t they been playing this way the whole game?

The opposite of this would be the New England Patriots during the Tom Brady years. They didn’t need to experience desperation to get clarity…they were so well prepared that they rarely found themselves in that type of position

If you can do that, good for you. Most of us can’t. They are the exception, not the rule.

2. There is freedom unleashed through desperation.

The throws get a little crisper, the routes a little sharper, the blocking gets a little stronger.

This happens all the time in life outside of football. I spent a long time in Alcoholics Anonymous when I was younger (beginning at age 19) and I saw people lose almost everything before they sought help.

They got to a point where it was clear what would happen if they didn’t get sober. Although it had to get gnarly first, there is a freedom that can come from knowing you HAVE to do something and there is only one course of action to take.

3. Don’t Wait For Three Quarters

If desperation has created clarity inside of you about something, act on it. Don’t put it off for three quarters. This also happens all of the time in life. You know what you should do but you don’t do it. No magic takes away the consequences of this.

A dream planted inside of you will not magically manifest on its own. God put a dream inside of you for something.

Find it, grow it, do it. Figure it out at all costs. Let desperation create your clarity and don’t let it go to waste.
