The News Break Creator Program: Here’s Everything You Need to Know
Can you really make $1,000 per month? Here’s my experience so far

Early last week, I received an email from the Growth Manager at News Break inviting me to join their Creator Program. To be honest, I was pretty skeptical at first.
A guaranteed $1,000 per month payment. Ad revenue share. Monthly payments based on pageviews. Referral bonuses. Cash awards for content creators with the most followers.
It sounded too good to be true. So, like any other junk mail, I quickly filed it away.
But then, as the week progressed, I heard more and more about the up and coming platform. Headquartered in Silicon Valley and backed by several venture capitalist firms, the email didn’t seem like junk after all.
I did a little more digging and liked what saw.
- The News Break app has 45 million monthly active users.
- In October of 2020, the app ranked #1 in News on Google Play and #3 in News in the App Store.
- Several other Medium writers have already jumped onto the platform, namely Matt Lillywhite and Vanessa Torre.
Okay, this seems legit.
After downloading the app and experiencing it for myself, I decided to give it a try and signed up for the program the same day. It’s only been a few days since I was approved, but here’s what I’ve learned so far.
What is News Break?
News Break is the #1 local-news aggregator in the United States, with over 45 million monthly active users across iOS, Android, and the web. In the company’s words…
“News Break delivers up-to-the-minute local news that matters to locals in neighborhoods throughout the nation.”

News Break exists to help fix the disconnect between local content demand and delivery in the United States. Because national news normally gets the most attention and airtime, local news is usually neglected — forcing people to hunt for information specific to their neighborhood or town.
Having established themselves as the premier local news platform, News Break is now making a huge push to help individual content creators like yourself share their ideas.

What is the Creator Program?
New’s Break’s Creator Program is designed to help content creators more easily share their ideas. And, according to company disclosures, News Break has a dedicated multimillion-dollar fund to help inspire and reward creators who share content on the platform.
News Break welcomes content creators in any category:
Fashion & lifestyle, health & fitness, food & cooking, arts & entertainment, uplifting or inspirational stories, jobs & industry, and many more. From what I’ve experienced so far, any and all content categories are welcome on News Break.
Robust Analytics Dashboard
News Break also gives creators in-depth analytics to more easily track their content and performance. With metrics such as impressions, page views, shares, unique visitors, likes, and comments —the analytics dashboard on News Break is much more robust than that of Medium.
How Much Can You Make?
The monetary incentives are laid out pretty clearly, however, there’s more to it than that. While the News Break does seem lucrative, there’s also a tremendous opportunity to be part of a young content platform that is growing like crazy.
1. Money
The creator program has some pretty exciting incentives that include:
- A guaranteed $1,000 per month payment when you post 12 eligible stories that month. Based on my experience, the articles have to at least 1,000 words.
- Ad revenue share based on pageviews.
- Referral bonuses for getting people to download the app or sign up as a creator.
- Up to $50k in prize money for creators during unique challenges/promotions.
2. First Mover Advantage
With 45 million monthly active users and 1.5 billion page views per month, News Break is a gold mine when it comes to getting eyeballs on your content.
The platform is still very much in its infancy. While it has already grown like crazy, there is still much more opportunity. Being one of the first creators to start sharing content on the platform is a great way to establish yourself as an authority.
For example, I published my first article on November 17th. In just three days, I’ve already experienced an unthinkable amount of impressions and views.

Signing Up for the Program
The process to sign up is pretty standard — you’ll need your name, email, and a few writing samples in order to get approved. I was approved in about 2 days, but their website notes it typically takes 5–7 business days.
Full Disclosure: This is my referral link. If you plan to sign up for the program, I’d love for you to use it. But if you’re not into that sort of thing, you can navigate to the News Break website, hit the “create with us” button, and fill out the application there. Regardless, I hope my experience helps you decide whether you’d like to join the platform or not.
Final Thoughts
While I’ve only been writing on News Break for a few days, I have only good things to say so far.
After downloading the app and using it for a few days, I noticed just how useful it actually is. With real-time local and neighborhood news, coronavirus updates, and personalized local weather — I actually really enjoyed being a consumer of the app.
In terms of the Creator Program — the money seems great, the views and engagement have surpassed my expectations, and the interface is actually quite interactive. All things considered, I’m extremely happy thus far.
And, with 45 million users and 1.5 billion monthly page views, News Break is an incredible opportunity to become an authority on a rapidly growing platform.
