Ours is a time when things are changing faster than ever before. It is, therefore, absolutely essential that we commit to guiding principles that will help us adapt to the dynamic nature of today’s society. Some traditional rules of life will no longer suffice in the new world dominated by technology, evolving relationships, and a constantly shifting cultural zeitgeist.

One of those traditional rules that may not be as effective or may even be catastrophic in the present day includes: sticking to one career path for life. The perceived benefits were believed to be job security, career progression, and attaining deep-level mastery. Today, however, people can even switch industries and pursue multiple careers over their lifetimes.

Another example, perhaps solely due to mental health concerns often being stigmatized, people were expected to just ignore mental health concerns and just push through. People were supposed to maintain a stiff upper lip- expressing vulnerability was a sign of weakness.

American aviator, Johnny Kim managed three impressive career changes all by age 37: he went from Navy Seal to doctor, to NASA astronaut.

Finally let us take a look at the five new rules of life, tailored to help us thrive in these contemporary times:

1. Change is the only constant so you have to stay in the loop:

Change is the cornerstone of every era. Technological advancements are occurring nowadays at almost breakneck speed, and even our societal norms seem to be in a constant state of flux but thrive we must.

To do that we learn to accept change because it is inevitable, and we must also learn to adapt to it in ways that are flexible, innovative, and sustainable, so we don’t get left behind.

One great benefit of such a mindset is, that we will come to view challenges as opportunities for learning and growth rather than just mere obstacles. Just like how Mary Jackson, one of the brilliant mathematicians at NASA whose work paved the way for space exploration, was able to embrace the challenges posed by a male-dominated field and contribute significantly to the success of the Apollo missions.

2. Pursue lifelong learning and growth:

The fast pace of change in our world demands a commitment to continual learning. Whether it is in our careers, personal interests, or even relationships, a willingness to adapt and grow is the key to our success and fulfillment. You can achieve this by setting aside time for deliberate practice. Whether it is learning a new skill, reading extensively on topics of interest, or seeking out mentorship. Abide by this rule by consistently investing in your personal and professional growth.

If, for instance, you are an entrepreneur, instead of clinging to outdated strategies, dedicate time to learning from current industry leaders, attending workshops, and seeking feedback from your team. This type of commitment to growth will not only revitalize your business but will also inspire your team to adopt a similar mindset.

3. Your mental health and self-care must be at the top of every list:

It can be very easy to neglect our mental well-being having found ourselves in times when society’s inexplicable obsession with productivity and the hustle is at an all-time high, but you must never lose sight of the fact that your mental health is the foundation upon which all other aspects of your life will rest upon.

To help ensure a solid foundation, incorporate mindfulness practices into your daily routine. Whether it is something as simple as deep breathing exercises, prayer or simply taking a few moments to be present, such practices can make a significant difference in your mental well-being.

I have seen many young professionals push themselves to the limit only to experience the inevitable burnout. They could have saved themselves that nasty experience if only they had made self-care a priority. Such a shift would have not only improved their mental health but would have also enhanced their overall productivity, and consequently, their satisfaction with life.

4. Mind your digital well-being:

This is a natural corollary to #3.

Our world is presently dominated by screens and they are not going away so it is imperative you find balance. While technology connects you, it can also disconnect you. Your digital well-being is therefore invaluable in this digital age.

This is why when one busy executive I know realized she was constantly tethered to her phone, decided to implement a “tech-free” rule, where she refrained from using digital devices for the whole day! She swears this simple practice not only rejuvenated her spirit but also strengthened her relationship.

To abide by this rule, you can practice digital detoxes too. You can maybe start small by setting aside dedicated times each day to unplug and engage in offline activities that nourish your soul too.

On the physical health tip, Tom Brady and his wife take it up a notch: they have an intentional routine to limit their exposure to wireless radiation like turning off all devices a good half-hour before going to bed and, as he says, his wife doesn’t even allow cell phones near the bed when they sleep.

“If there’s a TV in your bedroom consider putting it somewhere else. It’s a bedroom, not a tech cave.”

5. Authentic connections will lead you to unexpected opportunities and genuine collaborations:

I subscribe to the unique perspective that the mere nature of our digital interactions and social media should really bring us to the realization that genuine, meaningful relationships are now more precious than ever. You must observed by now that while it’s easy to accumulate thousands of “friends” online and have a wide network of contacts, the true value lies in the depth and authenticity of our real connections.

It is not all that difficult to nurture authentic connections. For instance, by engaging in active listening when conversing with someone you will truly listen to what they are trying to tell you instead of thinking just about what you will say next while they are speaking. This simple act can deepen your connections.

To go further, you may also want to take every opportunity to attend, if not organize, intimate gatherings where people engage in meaningful conversations. Such gatherings tend to, apart from strengthening your relationships, lead to unexpected opportunities and collaborations.

Hopefully, these 5 rules will some guidance to manage many of the complexities of modern living. It is my sincere hope that by incorporating the principles into your life, you will not only survive but thrive in our ever-evolving, fascinating world.
