The New 007- James Bond: A Black Woman
Is the world changing? Or do they want us to think that things are changing?
Disclaimer: First of all, I would like to say that I am not a James Bond fan and that if I have seen other James Bond’s movies, I probably forgot all about them. But, I do understand the cultural importance of James Bond.
Last Saturday, I went to the movies for the first time since the Pandemic. I went to see the new James Bond movie. I found it a bit confusing, but I wanted to write about “the new 007 agent being a black woman”.
In the movie, No Time To Die, Lashana Lynch plays ALREADY the new 007 agent Nomi. Daniel Graig comes back as a retired agent and assumes his last mission. He also dies in this movie. But because James Bond’s movies are so unrealistic, anything could happen.
Daniel Graig could do another movie, we never know, Nomi could not be the new 007 agent, and they could find another actor or actress to play the role. Honestly, ANYTHING can happen.
What the movie industry gets wrong about diversity and inclusivity is that they think that just by placing a black woman in the movie, things are already fixed. Well, the role is much deeper.
First of all, in this movie, James Bond completely ignores her. She is nothing to him. He doesn’t see her. It’s all about him, him and him. Ok, she is there but doing what?
What is funny is that they could have given her more action because there is a random woman played by Ana de Armas that does more than Nomi. Her presence is unnecessary, in my opinion, because James and Nomi could have worked together in the scenes that she acted in. He did accept Ana’s help (white lady), but why did he not accept Nomi’s one? There are hardly any scenes where we see Bond working with Nomi, except in the end.
I also think that they are just testing to see if a Black Woman as the new 007 agent sticks. They want to see the numbers. They want to see how much money this movie is going to bring to the table. And if it’s not profitable, she is out as the new lead agent, that’s for sure.
They don’t want to change. They are just testing to see what people want because if they wanted to change, the movie has given lots of opportunities for James Bond to have passed the torch to her by making her already the new official 007 agent, what a perfect ending and way to connect to the next movie. But this never happened.
Then there is a big problem with this new James Bond movie: The USA + UK Versus China + Russia. Capitalism Versus Communism. Seriously? Are we still doing the Cold War thing? I understand the historical rivalry is undeniable, but I am sure that they could come up with something different. In No Time To Die, the Russian Enemy in Chinese Lands is not even that powerful or scary and his backstory is not well explained.
If we want to move forward and make movies more inclusive and diverse, we need to change the old narratives about not only about marginalised black people, but also about stereotyped Russians and Chinese because it sounds old. We are in 2021.
There is also a conversation about how No Time To Die producers tried to be more inclusive and diverse, but these are only conversations. Only the people that actually worked at the movie production can tell how inclusive and diverse the crew were. The music, that’s always an essential asset for a new James Bond movie, was also created by a white singer, Billie Eilish. So things are still pretty white… and the same.
What do you think about this new James Bond movie and having a Black Woman as the new 007 agent?
