Summary

A young girl faced the challenging reality of being a surrogate mother to her three siblings due to absentee parents, which led to a tumultuous childhood marked by anger and inadequate caregiving, but she later strove to be a better role model for them.

Abstract

At the tender age of eight, the author found herself in the role of a mother to her three younger siblings, a responsibility she shouldered due to her parents' absence—her mother worked late and her stepfather was often intoxicated. Despite her best efforts, she acknowledges that she lacked the knowledge and skills to properly care for her siblings, which sometimes resulted in her taking out her frustrations on them. As she matured, she recognized her shortcomings and made a conscious effort to demonstrate more compassion and love, hoping to break the cycle of stress and inadequate parenting that she had inadvertently perpetuated. Now, as adults with children of their own, she is confident that her siblings will be better caregivers than she was able to be in her youth.

Opinions

  • The author expresses regret for not being the best mother figure due to her young age and lack of guidance.
  • She admits to feeling angry during that period and recognizes that her siblings bore the brunt of her emotional outbursts.
  • Despite the challenging circumstances, she believes that her siblings have learned from the experience and will be capable parents, unlike herself during their childhood.
  • The author reflects on the cyclical nature of parenting behaviors and is determined to be a positive influence in her siblings' lives as they raise their own children.

The Mother Of Us

Too young to be a mother

I was a mother of four at age eight My three siblings, plus myself My parents weren’t there Mother worked long into the night Step-dad always flying high I cared for my children The best I knew how But that’s the point I didn’t know how I was furious And took it out on them I wonder where I learned that from Doesn’t matter Point is They didn’t deserve To have even more stress back then I wasn’t the best mother But I was all they had Once I grew I tried to be a better role model I tried to show them more compassion and love Because I didn’t back then The situation wasn’t right For any child to thrive They are all grown now And have their own children I have no concern That they will not do their best Not like I did I was just a kid
