The Most Important Habits to Cultivate to Be Successful

Success isn’t merely a stroke of luck!

The concept of success can be many things - To some, it is elusive, to others it is coveted, and to the rest, it may evoke images of grand achievements, wealth, and recognition.

As far as I am concerned, ‘Success is Personal’. Success is so subjective that I cannot think of a compelling definition of what that means to me. It is also so dynamic that it is hard to put the finger on ‘when I have finally arrived’.

My definition of success when I was a student was vastly different from what it was as a young professional.

Now, it is entirely different. It is constantly evolving.

Moreover, there are multiple dimensions to success — the most important ones are not even remotely related to wealth and accomplishments. You know what I am referring to here!

We are conditioned to believe that success is a destination. However, this conventional approach to success overlooks a fundamental truth: true success is not merely a destination but a journey — a journey defined not by the outcome, but by the habits and principles that shape it.

As we all know, habit formation takes time, discipline, practice, and consistency.

Inspired by Stephen Covey’s book, “The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People”, these are some habits that we can intentionally cultivate to carve a path towards the achievement of our end goals.

Be Proactive.

Take responsibility for your actions. Instead of always waiting to react to circumstances, try to anticipate circumstances and influence outcomes.

Visualise the Bigger Picture.

Spend time to visualise goals and aspirations before jumping into action mode. This way, you are more able to align actions with longer-term objectives.

Prioritise Relentlessly.

Choose to invest your energies in the important tasks first. Not all urgent tasks will matter to you in achieving your end goals.

Cultivate a Mindset of Mutual Benefit.

Strategise, partner, collaborate, and develop long-term relationships with allies. Break down your efforts into small, manageable, bite-sized chunks and create win-win solutions.

More importantly,

Practice Empathy. Seek first to understand others’ perspectives before expressing your own. Effective communication hinges on genuine understanding.

Success is neither an accident nor a stroke of luck. It is a result of deliberate habits cultivated over time to achieve the end goal you desire.

Create a life that you are proud to live!
