Writing Journey

The Most Helpful Lessons From My Two Months Of Writing

What I have learned after writing for two months.

Improving to the infinity and beyond! Image from Freepik.

I met wonderful people here on Medium.

Without engaging with others here, I’d never challenge myself to write more. Is the community around me that motivates me to keep going.

After 2 months of writing, I learned a few things and I will share my impressions and lessons with you.

You need readers. Don’t be a Lone Wolf.

Let’s remove the obvious out of the way. It took me a few weeks to understand this and a few more to learn how to do it properly.

When you start, you’re the only reader. Tough it up son, that’s the reality.

Medium algorithm doesn’t even notice you yet.

Writing and publishing articles are important but that alone won’t get you far. You might start twitching the algorithm and get views but that is as far as it goes.

That’s where engaging is crucial and everyone agrees. You see written pieces about it and how to do it. Read other people’s pieces, if you like what you read clap, comment, and highlight. When you comment, make it interesting to raise some eyebrows.

If they’re interested in knowing who you are, they’ll read some of your pieces and even follow you.

Go out there and start growing your network. Look at examples from Ryan Canady and Boysie Gordon and study how they’ve done it.

Don’t Make Writing a Habit. Let it be part of who you are.

Writing should be who you are. Your identity.

Write every day. In the beginning, you don’t have that habit. The struggle of starting a blank page, typing a few words, and seeing if it makes sense.

My first articles sucked, yours will too. It takes practice. Once you overcome that hurdle, things become easier and now it’s time to create the habit of writing every day.

I’ve tracked the days I was writing. It wouldn’t matter how many words I was writing. What mattered was to create the habit of writing. In the morning or the evening, I sit on my laptop, open a blank document, and start typing.

Doing this for a long period, writing will be a natural thing to do as brushing your teeth. You will feel weird if you don’t do it.

There’s no good writer that doesn’t read.

Reading improves your writing.

There are a lot of benefits to reading, and getting better at writing is one of them. But be selective on what source you’re reading from. You’ll not get better at writing if you choose to read low-quality content.

Books are a great source. My preference is books about writing, other options would be biographies. Fiction books are also a great source for quality writing and learning storytelling.

Make reading part of your daily routine. Reading and making notes will help you improve your writing over time.

Learn and get inspiration from others.

There are tons of good writers out there. Choose your favorites, subscribe to their newsletters, and read their content.

I’ve a few selected here on Medium, and I will add more when enjoy their writing. Most of them are willing to share their learnings from time to time. Make sure you follow the ones whose style resonates more with you.

Take the learnings from more than one source. Study their unique styles, see what makes them stand out, and come up with your unique style.

Writing is what enjoy most to do on my spare time. There’s nothing at the moment that gives me more joy. Reading was the catalyst and continues to be the fuel to continue writing.

The more I express myself to others, the more confident I will become with my writing. That will allow me to try different topics that I enjoy.

For the next months, I will challenge myself to push more content more frequently. I will adjust and find a balance between my spare time and the quality of my pieces.

When you want to be one of the best, nothing gets between you and that goal. The pure joy of the process of getting there is what matters.

Thanks For Reading!

Before you go, if you like what you read please clap, and leave a comment or your feedback.

It will help me grow and understand what readers like to hear from me.
