The Most Helpful Cancer Treatment Drug You’ve Never Heard Of
80 years of science-backed evidence
I recently had lunch with a woman I hadn’t seen in five years. The last time I’d seen her, she’d just been diagnosed with breast cancer. She looked vibrant and healthy, so I congratulated her on her successful treatment.
She surprised me by saying she had not had surgery, chemotherapy, or radiation. Instead, she was using a plant extract. It is considered the first line of defense against cancer by many Germans. But it is virtually unheard of in the United States.
The plant is European Mistletoe.
My father and his doctors are currently working out the best treatment for his thyroid cancer. If it could help him at all, I had to uncover the truth about this plant extract.
What is European Mistletoe?
European Mistletoe is not the Mistletoe used in the United States at Christmas. The leaves are a different shape, and it produces far fewer berries than the American variety. It has a different chemical makeup.
There are over 900 species of Mistletoe. All are parasitic shrubs which grow on a variety of different trees. They draw water and nutrients from the host tree. Some species of Mistletoe also perform photosynthesis for their host.
Even within European Mistletoe, there are many species. The plant has developed slightly different traits based on which type of tree it grows on.
The leaves, berries, and stem of the plant are all used for traditional medicines in Europe. One of the most common forms of traditional healing is drinking a Mistletoe tea. Since the tea is made from the leaves and berries, it can contain more toxins than medicines made from the stem.
Prescription medications are created from Mistletoe extracts. The names of the medicines describe which type of tree the Mistletoe grew on, and thus the species.
These extracts from various forms of Mistletoe can be injected directly into tumors. They can also be injected under the skin, into a vein, or taken orally.
How is European Mistletoe used to treat cancer?
The most common use of European Mistletoe is as an adjunct prescription. The patient will have standard cancer treatments, such as surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation. Studies show European Mistletoe helps to increase patient survival and quality of life. It also helps lessen the side effects of chemotherapy and radiation.
Oncologist Luis Diaz is a director at Johns Hopkins Kimmel Cancer Center. He says that patients respond quickly to European Mistletoe. “That’s a universal feature I’ve seen in all patients who get mistletoe. Their [color] improves; they have more energy.”
Some doctors directly kill cancers and boost the immune system with European Mistletoe. It is also used to slow tumor growth while non-standard natural treatments are used. These treatments, such as nutritional changes, take much longer than standard treatments.
Various types of cancers react differently to the different species of Mistletoe. Studies have shown a 30% — 70% reduction in tumor growth across most of the tested lines of cancer. Breast cancer seems to be the most susceptible, with over 70% reduction of tumor growth.
Is European Mistletoe available in the United States?
You can buy European Mistletoe teas in the United States. You can also buy herbal supplements that include the leaves, berries, or stems. Be certain that they are made from European Mistletoe, and not American Mistletoe. American Mistletoe has not been shown to be useful with cancer.
Caution should be taken if attempting to self-medicate with teas or supplements. European Mistletoe can interact with certain blood pressure medications and immunosuppressants. It is always best to consult a doctor before taking any supplements.
You are not able to buy the prescription medication extracts in the United States. That does not mean they are unavailable, though!
One option is to join a clinical trial conducted with a research facility, such as Johns Hopkins. Those are often limited to specific types of cancers. (At the time of this writing, the only open trials dealt with pancreatic and bladder cancers.)
Fortunately, that is not the only option for treatment.
If you are a patient of a naturopathic doctor (an ND instead of an MD), they can prescribe European Mistletoe. (A naturopath, unlike an ND, cannot write prescriptions.) You can then use that prescription to order the medication from a Canadian pharmacy.
As long as you have a prescription, the Canadian pharmacy can legally sell it to you. And while US pharmacies can’t sell it, the medication itself is legal. You can own and use the medication in the US. From the perspective of customs, it is an herbal supplement. There is no problem with the Canadian pharmacy shipping it to an address in the United States.
Final thoughts
Many of us will deal with a cancer diagnosis, either for ourselves or a loved one. It’s best to have a full understanding of options that you can bring to the table when deciding on treatment.
You may wish to pursue standard treatments. In which case, European Mistletoe can lessen the side effects of treatment, and increase your odds of survival. In Germany and Switzerland, where European Mistletoe is used by most cancer patients and covered by insurance, this is the primary use.
My friend with breast cancer lost her mother to chemotherapy. Yes, the chemotherapy killed her, not the cancer. She had an extremely adverse reaction to the drug. So standard treatments were never an option for my friend.
Similarly, my father’s doctors have already ruled out radiation treatments. And they have some significant hesitancy about recommending surgery. They think chemotherapy may work, but are concerned about his ability to handle the full course of treatment. Anything that would help him withstand the chemotherapy treatments could only improve his prognosis.
You may wish to pursue alternative therapies, such as nutritional, lifestyle, or others. In that case, European Mistletoe may slow the growth of your cancer. Getting more time for alternative therapies to work is beneficial.
