PERSONAL OPINION
The Most Beautiful Love Song
Ever Written
“Opinions are like a**holes. Everybody’s got one.” — movie Dirty Harry (Clint Eastwood as Harry Callahan)
In a nutshell, that’s the problem with opinions, absolutes and sweeping generalities; the moment you designate something as the best, you will find a huge segment of the population disagreeing with you. And rightfully so. Vanilla, chocolate or strawberry? Coffee, tea or coke? Opinions are subjective.
So, solely in my opinion, if I had to pick the most beautiful love song ever written, here’s the one I would select and three reasons why.
The song I would pick: “Everything I Do” performed by Bryan Adams
Why?
- The Poetry I am swept away by the lyrics — exquisite, simple, soulful, powerful poetry.
“Look into my eyes You will see What you mean to me — Search your heart Search your soul And when you find me there You’ll search no more”
- Bryan Adams’ voice has that sensual rasp and distinctive tonality, that gives the song a bit of a bite, an edge compared to being totally sappy (a by-product of most love songs and power ballads).
- The music and melody for me, romantic, cinematic, beautiful instrumentation including piano, drums, there is a slow dance feel and yes, perhaps medieval vibe resonating and pleasing to my ear. (cue ‘Are You Going to Scarborough Fair?’ -Simon and Garfunkel)
grace notes: This song “Everything I Do” was written by Michael Kamen, Bryan Adams and Robert John “Mutt” Lange for Kevin Cosner’s film, Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves.
