The Most Annoying Things On Facebook
Facebook is one of the largest social media apps. It is also one of the apps that I log in to more often.
I enjoy Facebook mainly for its groups. On the platform, you can join groups of like-minded people to interact and share information with people from all over the world. This makes the world much smaller and the spread of useful information much faster.
Also, unlike Instagram which portrays a heavily edited life, Facebook can be a little bit more real. And because the platform insists on users using their real names, it comes out as more authentic when compared to platforms where users use pseudos.
I even get my major news from Facebook. That’s how beneficial it is.
Well, the cool kids have said that Facebook is dead, but I disagree. I find immense value in the Facebook groups I am in and I know I can reach someone through the platform even when I don’t have their phone number.
There are some things that I find annoying on Facebook, though. Here are some of them.
Birthdays
When I joined Facebook over ten years ago, I was very excited about birthdays because I would receive many birthday messages even for a person who does not celebrate their birthday in real life.
I would also make sure that I messaged as many people as I could on their birthdays after the Facebook prompt.
Birthdays are now meeeeh on the app. The messages are usually lame, duplicated, and insincere.
However much Facebook tries to revive birthdays by creating interactive features to help people celebrate, birthday messaging is still annoying on the app.
People gave gotten so lazy about sending them it has gone from a plain and redundant hbd to nothing.
The next social media platform that will make it big, will be the one that will make birthdays eventful. Everybody has one. And an interactive, enjoyable and beneficial way to celebrate birthdays could attract a lot of public attention.
I am actually thinking about that idea right now. Stay tuned!
Duplication
Most of my Facebook friends are also the people I follow on Instagram. And because Instagram gives the option of posting content on both apps at one go, there is a lot of duplication on both apps.
I also follow my favourite celebrities on my various social media platforms and they post the same content on all of them.
You will find the same pictures and stories from the same person on both apps. This is redundant, repetitive, and annoying. And it makes Facebook in particular to be very boring.
Some targeted ads
I was chatting about babies on my WhatsApp with a friend. Ongoing to my Facebook, all my ads were about baby products. Baby clothes, shoes, coats, toys, and other stuff.
In another instance, I was chatting about container homes, and ongoing to my Facebook, all my ads were about container homes.
I was very annoyed in both instances. It's OK for all my ads to be about food when I am searching for food on Facebook, but not when I am searching for it outside of Facebook or chatting about it with my friends on other platforms.
These experiences made me feel like Facebook was using me as a product and made me limit my usage of it. I even uninstalled the app because of this.
It is very annoying to experience apps that are spying on your activities outside of them. They scare you and make you feel afraid of using them.
It’s okay to see a couple of ads on your social media. After all, they are a business whose major intention like many businesses is to maximise profits.
I have already advertised a sponsored product on Facebook a few times, and I received somewhat satisfactory results. For that reason, I am cool with ads on my Facebook feed. But when they have to go through uncouth means such as spying to send targeted ads, then that is annoying.
People you may know
Yes, Facebook, I think I may know those people. But I do not want to add them as my friends. If I did, I would have searched for them and added them already!
I also do not wish to see them on my feed, thank you.
They are probably people that are looking to snoop into my life to see how I am doing.
Just because I knew them in my life, or because our life's paths had crossed before, does not mean that I want to have them in my life right now.
The most annoying thing about ‘people you may know’ on Facebook is that the app gives you an option of not seeing this feature, then minutes later, the feature pops up back again.
What’ annoys you the most on your social media?
