The Missing Ingredient Holding You Back Isn’t Lack Of Emotion

It’s that you still read some of the half-done advice articles in your feed

I read an article today whose author claimed to know the one thing most writers are missing. His cure-all for all of you mediocre writers out there was emotion. Put more feeling into your work, he said.

If you even know how to do that anymore. Most of us, of course, are dried-up SEO robots.

Someone rather famous in the Medium world-yes, it was Tim Denning- wrote this astounding revelation that will one day be preached as the writer’s gospel.

I sat there and read this sentiment. Most writers are lacking emotion; their work is dry, to paraphrase.

I giggled. What? This work was dry! This essay on how we need more emotion was fairly emotionless.

I’m not trying to contradict a well-regarded writer to gain clout. I’ve seen Tim Denning shit all over writers who use his name in their articles, and I think it’s a little pompous, frankly.

Maybe he’s the secret ingredient we’re missing in our writing!

I simply want to point out that even the Medium gods sometimes give advice that we should take the time to think about critically.

The fact of the matter is that most writers on this platform-or any platform- don’t lack emotion at all. I think it’s the strong suit of anyone that enjoys writing.

We deliver what we know will sell. This means titles that fit a formula. SEO-friendly content. Repurposed work. Keyword research. We fit our big emotions into logical frameworks because that is how we begin to succeed.

It’s how Tim Denning has succeeded. It’s how anyone succeeds. There is certainly something to be said for the raw appeal of an emotional video or article.

However, writing only to appeal to emotion time and again won’t set you up for success.

It won’t get you ranked on Google. It won’t get you featured. It won’t bring you repeat readers. It won’t take up a niche that isn’t saturated yet.

Emotion isn’t what we’re missing as writers or creators.

However, we might be hitting a shortage of good advice.
