Summary

Gail, a career woman who reluctantly agreed to have a child with her husband Roger, faces a surprise when their neighbor's dog eats their child's first birthday cake, leading to a series of unexpected events.

Abstract

During her child's first birthday party, Gail discovers that the birthday cake has gone missing, causing her significant distress. Her husband Roger, who had persuaded her to have a child despite her reservations, tries to calm her by suggesting she might have misplaced the cake. However, security footage reveals that their neighbor's dog entered their kitchen and began eating the cake, and the neighbor, upon retrieving her dog, took the remaining cake without informing Gail or Roger. The incident leaves the party guests in disbelief, and Gail, after learning the truth, is outraged and plans to confront the neighbor. Just as she is about to leave, a replacement cake is delivered by a ride-sharing service on behalf of the neighbor, who apologizes for the mishap, resolving the situation.

Opinions

  • Gail is portrayed as a woman who has struggled with the transition to motherhood, feeling miserable since granting her husband's wish for a child.
  • Roger is depicted as more laid-back and optimistic, attempting to downplay the situation and reassure Gail.
  • The neighbor's actions are seen as inconsiderate and bizarre, as she takes the cake without explanation after her dog eats part of it.
  • The narrative suggests a lack of communication between the neighbors, which contributes to the misunderstanding and conflict.
  • The resolution of the story with the delivery of a new cake indicates a sense of community and the neighbor's acknowledgment of the oversight.

“Silence! Please, everyone just be quiet for a moment!” Gail screams, as she becomes frustrated after realizing someone has taken her child’s first birthday cake.

Gail is a career woman that never intended on having children. She’s in her early thirties, but Roger, her husband, is twenty years her senior. The two married three years ago, and Roger informed Gail that he wants at least one child. Gail granted his request, but has been miserable ever since, and the thought of having more children are now slim to none.

“Sweetheart, calm down. I’m sure you probably forgot where you placed the cake in the house,” Roger said.

“Where else do you put a cake, other than in the kitchen? Quit blaming me, Roger, and just go to the store and get another cake.”

Given that his wife stated she left the cake in the kitchen, Roger goes to view the footage from the security camera. It appears their next door neighbor’s dog entered through the kitchen door and started eating the cake.

Then, the neighbor came over to get the dog and noticed the dog eating the cake. Surprisingly, the neighbor took the dog and the cake, then rushed out of the house, without informing Gail or Roger.

Children are starting to ask Gail when will they get some cake. Adults are chattering, as no one can believe that someone would steal a child’s birthday cake.

“Everyone, I have some news. I just looked at the video footage, and it appears our neighbor’s dog came in and started eating the cake. Then, our neighbor came to get her dog, and took the cake, as well,” Roger explains.

“Honey, you’re kidding, right? When did this happen?”

“It was approximately thirty minutes ago.”

“Who does that?! This is ridiculous! Our child won’t have any cake for his first birthday because of a hungry dog and an inconsiderate neighbor!” Gail screams, as she grabs her purse.

“Gail, sweetheart, please calm down. Where do you think you’re going? You can’t leave the party.”

“I’m going to give our neighbor a piece of my mind, then I’m going to buy another cake.”

All of a sudden, there’s a knock at the front door. The neighbor doesn’t drive, so she had a ride sharing service deliver a new cake, along with a message stating she’s sorry for the mishap. She didn’t know the child’s name, as her dog had already eaten the name from the cake, so she had “Happy Birthday” written on the replacement cake.
