Summary

"The Migration of Pink Elephants" is a whimsical poem that uses the metaphorical journey of pink elephants to explore themes of change, perseverance, and the ephemeral nature of joy.

Abstract

The poem "The Migration of Pink Elephants" is a creative narrative that follows the fantastical journey of pink elephants as they migrate to warmer climates, eating frozen dandelions and landing on mushrooms. Inspired by a humorous question on an international cultural exchange website, the poem delves into deeper themes such as the inevitability of change and the importance of adapting to survive. It also touches on the power of wishes and hard work, likening the pink elephants' consumption of dandelions to the act of making a wish and seeing it through to fruition. The poem concludes with a reminder to appreciate and enjoy the present, acknowledging that beauty and happiness, much like the elephants' idyllic new home, are transient.

Opinions

  • The author believes that change is a constant and necessary part of life, much like the seasonal migrations of the pink elephants.
  • The poem suggests that wishes, symbolized by dandelions, can come true with effort and dedication.
  • There is an underlying opinion that the fleeting nature of happiness should encourage us to savor and appreciate the joyful moments in life even more.
  • The author implies that the journey of life, with its challenges and rewards, is akin to the pink elephants' migration, with each step potentially leading to a better situation.
  • The poem is presented as light-hearted and childlike on the surface but carries profound insights into life's experiences.

The Migration of Pink Elephants

A poem about pink elephants and life lessons

Crisp, cold air

Colours everywhere

A young pink elephant flaps its ears.

It’s that time of the year;

The great migration -

Frozen dandelions

A curious thing to eat

The pink elephants’ feet

Turn light and airy

Like clouds, so fluffy.

Running,

Almost floating

Across continents -

Oceans and mountains

Finally,

A warmer country.

Landing gently on mushrooms;

A land of beautiful blooms.

The pink elephants sigh

As they watch butterflies.

Now life is indeed better

Until the next winter.

This poem is inspired by a random question that was asked in jest by someone on an international cultural exchange website (that shall be unnamed for privacy purposes): “What do you think of the migration of pink elephants during winter?” I had replied to that question along the lines of “The pink elephants eat frozen dandelions that turned them fluffy like clouds as they float across continents and land on mushrooms in a place with warmer climate. And that is why you should never eat strange mushrooms in the wild as they had been stepped on by elephants”. The person who asked the question found it hilarious as nobody had ever attempted to answer that question.

Today, I decided to turn it into a poem because why not? This is my first published poem (on Medium or anywhere else).

At first, it is easy to think of this poem as light-hearted, childlike and even nonsensical. However, there are actually a few themes that I had in mind when I wrote it.

  1. Change is inevitable ~Just like the pink elephants, we are bound to experience changes in our lives. In order to survive, we have to be ready to adapt to these changes. Change is also constant, as in the case of the pink elephants, they would have to migrate again before the next winter.
  2. Wishes do come true (if we work at it) ~Dandelions are often associated with wishes. As a child, I am sure many of us had made a wish while blowing the white fluffy seeds off a dandelion. Just like the pink elephants, we will have success in reaching our dreams if we work hard at it.
  3. Enjoy something while it lasts ~In the last part of the poem, the pink elephants are enjoying themselves in their new home, surrounded by mushrooms, flowers and butterflies. It is a beautiful place for them to live and rest before the next winter arrives. In life, we should always enjoy something that we have right now. Although it may not be permanent, we should still enjoy something while it lasts. In fact, we should appreciate it even more due to its fleeting and temporary nature.
