Abstract

The poem "The Metronome" by Robert G. Metivier is a poignant piece that uses the metaphor of a metronome's steady, unwavering rhythm to reflect the resilience and determination of the Ukrainian people amidst the Russian invasion. The verses convey a sense of quiet strength and unyielding progression, despite the heavy toll of war. The poem is structured in the ballade form, specifically the Chanson rhyme scheme, which includes a refrain that emphasizes the theme of perseverance. Accompanying the poem is a commentary that acknowledges the dire situation in Ukraine and the unexpected resilience of its people, who continue to fight for their freedom against overwhelming odds. The author draws inspiration from Eliot A. Cohen's article in The Atlantic, emphasizing the critical moment in the war where Western support is crucial to Ukraine's victory. The content concludes with a plea for increased assistance from the West and a recognition of Ukraine's earned right to victory and freedom.

Opinions

  • The author expresses admiration for Ukraine's continued resistance and fighting spirit under the leadership of Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
  • There is a strong opinion that the West should intensify its support for Ukraine, suggesting that the current level of assistance is insufficient.

The Metronome

They cannot lead a charge with a dirge

Simple and slow The metronome beats And with each stroke The low tap of feet A requiem keen Bell tolls unheard They cannot lead A charge with a dirge

Bent from the blows But not in defeat Forward they go To their destiny Though thrown offbeat And death seems assured Their promise they keep A charge with a dirge

His face set composed The words that he speaks Grip their hearts whole They quicken the beat The cadence increase Is steadily heard Down through the streets A charge from a dirge

The whole world will see Their victory surge You cannot lead A charge with a dirge

All of Ukraine has, under extreme duress, continued their battle for freedom under the leadership of Volodymyr Zelenskyy. They were expected to fail early on, but continue to press forward. Their suffering under this onslaught of atrocities has been horrendous, and a lesser people would have surrendered. But they are on the path to gain the victory only with the aggressive help of the West.

It is past time for us to step it up with them, and make this happen, not hang our heads in consternation and fear or hold back They deserve better. If there were such a thing, they have more than earned it! We cannot stand as spectators to this genocide!
