The Mermaid and the Fearless Fisherman
#3 A Hawaiian Folklore
Since this is a native Hawaiian folklore story passed down from my Hawaiian family, I need to present this story with the ultimate respect for my native Hawaiian families and write it in the language of my ancestors.
I ka wa kahiko, ma na aina uliuli o Hawaii, e noho ana kekahi kanaka lawaia opio, o Kekoa kona inoa. Ua kaulana ʻo Kekoa no kona puʻuwai lokomaikaʻi, ʻano akahai, a aloha i ke kai. I kekahi lā, ʻoiai ʻo ia e hoʻolei ana i kāna ʻupena i loko o ka wai aniani, ua puka mai kekahi mea kupua mai loko mai o ka hohonu. He kao wahine nani me ka lauoho loloa e kahe ana a me na unahi alohilohi.
English translation:
Once upon a time, in the lush green lands of Hawaii, there lived a young fisherman named Kekoa. Kekoa was known for his kind heart, gentle spirit, and love for the sea. One day, as he cast his net into the crystal-clear waters, a magical creature emerged from the depths. It was a beautiful mermaid with long, flowing hair and shimmering scales.

English Translation: The mermaid introduced herself as Lani, the guardian of the sea. She had heard of Kekoa’s pure heart and sought his help to save her ocean from a terrible curse. The sea witch, Malia, had cast a spell that polluted the waters, causing harm to marine life.
Ua hoʻohiki ʻo Kekoa me ke aloha e kōkua iā Lani i kāna ʻimi. Ua hoʻomaka ʻo ia i kahi huakaʻi pōʻino, alakaʻi ʻia e nā ʻuhane Hawaiʻi kahiko, e ʻimi i ka Makua kaao, he akua lokomaikaʻi a pohihihi. Ma ke ala, ua hālāwai ʻo Kekoa i nā hoʻāʻo like ʻole a me nā mea e hoʻāʻo ai i kona wiwo ʻole a me kona kūpaʻa.
English translation: After days of treacherous travel, Keko finally reached the sacred cave where Makua dwelled. With respect and reverence, he pleaded for guidance in defeating the sea witch and restoring harmony to the ocean. In response, Makua bestowed upon Kekoa a magical conch shell imbued with the power to break Malia’s curse.
Me ka puʻu puʻupuʻu kupua, hoʻi akula ʻo Kekoa i kai a kū i mua o Malia. Me ka wiwo ʻole a me ke kōkua ʻana o Lani, ua puhi ʻo Kekoa i ka pūpū, me ka hoʻopuka ʻana i ka leo nui e paʻa ana a puni ka moana. ʻO ka mana o ka pūpū conch i hōʻole i ka hōʻino, hoʻomaʻemaʻe i ka wai a hoʻokuke aku i ke kupua kai a mau loa aku.
English translation: Armed with the enchanted conch shell, Kekoa returned to the sea and confronted Malia. With great courage and the help of Lani, Kekoa blew into the shell, unleashing a mighty sound that reverberated throughout the ocean. The power of the conch shell negated the curse, purifying the waters and banishing the sea witch forever.
Ma ke ʻano he hōʻailona o ka mahalo, ua hāʻawi ke kai iā Kekoa i nā iʻa he nui, i mea e pōmaikaʻi ai kona kauhale. Ua lilo ʻo Kekoa lāua ʻo Lani i mau hoaaloha no ke ola; ʻO kā lāua paʻa ʻana he hōʻailona ia o ka lokahi ma waena o ka ʻāina a me ke kai Ua laha aʻe ko lāua moʻolelo koa, a lilo i moʻolelo poʻomanaʻo Hawaiʻi i aloha nui ʻia a hoʻomanaʻo hoʻi i nā hanauna e hiki mai ana i ka pono o ka mālama ʻana i ka nani o ke ʻano.
English translation: As a token of gratitude, the sea rewarded Kekoa with a bountiful catch of fish, ensuring the prosperity of his village. Kekoa and Lani became lifelong friends; their bond was a symbol of unity between the land and sea Their heroic tale spread far and wide, becoming beloved Hawaiian folklore and reminding generations to come of the importance of preserving nature’s beauty.
A pēlā i hoʻomanawanui ai ka moʻolelo o Kekoa lāua ʻo Lani, he moʻolelo mau loa o ke koa, ka hoaloha, a me ka ʻuhane mau o ko Hawaiʻi pae ʻāina.
English translation: And so the legend of Kekoa and Lani endured, a timeless story of bravery, friendship, love, and the enduring spirit of the Hawaiian Islands.
E mālama iā Mother Earth. ʻO ia wale nō ka mea i loaʻa iā mākou.
English Translation: Take care of Mother Earth.
