Summary

Medium is updating its Partner Program with significant changes effective August 2023, aiming to reward high-quality, human-written content and expand its reach to more countries.

Abstract

The Medium Partner Program is undergoing substantial modifications starting in August 2023. These changes include the eligibility expansion to writers from 12 additional countries, the removal of the 100-follower requirement for new writers, and the introduction of new earnings metrics that consider audience engagement, such as highlights, replies, follows, and claps. Additionally, to participate in the Partner Program, writers are now required to be paying Medium members. These updates are designed to promote authentic, well-crafted stories and discourage clickbait and low-quality or AI-generated content. The changes reflect Medium's commitment to fostering a platform that values human writing and encourages the creation of valuable content.

Opinions

  • The author, MUSA AYAZ, supports the changes, believing they will encourage more authentic articles and give writers the recognition they deserve.
  • The abolition of the 100-follower requirement is seen as positive, allowing more writers to join the Partner Program and potentially increasing the diversity of content.
  • The new metric system for earnings, which includes audience interaction, is appreciated by the author as it may lead to higher earnings for stories that engage readers beyond just reading time.
  • The requirement for Partner Program participants to be paying Medium members is noted, although the author expresses mixed feelings about this change.
  • The author is optimistic about the future of Medium, acknowledging that while the platform is not perfect, the recent changes are a step in the right direction to prioritize human-written content and add value to the platform.

The Medium Partner Program is Changing in a Big Way.

Buster Benson commented on Medium on July 18th about some significant changes coming to the Medium Partner Program in August 2023. He claims that the modifications are intended to reward the stories that they “feel most proud of bringing to [their] members.” But what are these changes, and how do they influence you, whether you’re just starting out on Medium or have been there for a while?

Let’s take a closer look.

Why is Medium altering its Partner Program?

As demands change, initiatives such as Medium’s Partner Program must adjust. There was no follower criteria for entering the Partner Program, for example, and then suddenly anyone with fewer than 100 followers had to reach at least 100 followers by a particular deadline or risk being booted out.

That adjustment was intended to ensure that content submitted for monetization came from authors Medium knew it could trust, which makes sense.

However, this particular set of reforms has two stated goals:

  1. To promote high-quality, well-written content and personal stories with hidden wisdom and knowledge — which, as Buster accurately points out, is why members come to Medium in the first place. So promoting this type of activity makes perfect sense. To discourage clickbait, low-quality, or AI-generated material, as well as what Medium considers “misinformation, hate, or other forms of polarizing negativity.” (However, neither of these concepts appears to be defined.) AI-written articles would not earn as much now, and human-written content will be encouraged and will earn more.
  2. The idea is to promote individuals who provide high-quality content while discouraging those who try to cheat the system, which I’m glad to hear. Medium expects authors to take the time to develop high-quality, valuable pieces, just like any excellent content creator should.

Personally, this is a sane approach by the medium, as more authentic articles will be encouraged and writers will finally see their potential, which surely will give them a boost.

What are the changes to the Partner Program?

The Medium Partner Program will undergo the following changes beginning August 1st, 2023:

Writers from 12 more countries will be eligible to join.

The Medium Partner Program has so far been offered to 33 countries. Unfortunately, many brilliant writers who do not live in a supported geographical location have been unable to participate. While the residency criterion in a sponsored region remains, the Partner Program will now be offered to people in 12 more countries than before.

Brazil, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Gibraltar, Hungary, India, Liechtenstein, Malaysia, Malta, Thailand, and the United Arab Emirates are among the new countries. (Welcome to the new writers if any of you are reading.)

It is also said that by the end of the year, 50 more countries will be added.

The 100-follower limit is abolished!

This is a significant development for anyone looking to start writing on Medium and earning money from it. Previously, everyone interested in joining the Medium Partner Program had to have at least 100 followers. This, I believe, is to assure that all applicants to the Partner Program are authors capable of producing valuable content.

According to Buster, the restriction was “initially instituted as part of an effort to ensure member-only stories were written by writers that had some track record of writing for engaged audiences.” That makes sense. This is very good news, I think, as more writers will finally write on Medium, and the community will only grow. There should not be any restriction on writing. I believe so.

To participate in the Partner Program, you must be a paying Medium member.

Until now, the Medium Partner Program has been open to anybody who fits the requirements. However, one of those requirements is that you be a paying member of Medium. In other words, in order to be paid by Medium, you must first pay the subscription price. While I’m not sure I like the new look, it is what it is. Some have called for it, while others, including yourself, have been opposed to the concept.

While I am a paying member, I am relieved to hear that current Partner Program participants would not be required to become members immediately.

Earnings metrics will be slightly different.

This is a good change in my eyes and the most significant one in my eyes. Prior to these modifications, the revenues of a Medium piece were determined by the amount of time that paying Medium users spent reading it. While it will continue to be the overall basis for deciding how much a piece makes, Medium is expanding the measures. They will now consider how much interaction a story obtains. This will include items such as highlights, Replies, follows, and Claps.

Their goal is to have a better understanding of a story’s quality by observing how much or how little the audience engages with it. In theory, a narrative that ignites a discussion and gets people involved will earn more than one that doesn’t engage the audience at all.

While most people do not like the new metric system, I quite appreciate it. This will definitely boost your stories and articles, as more people tend to clap rather than give them a full read, which is the sad truth.

CONCLUSION

While there are still other changes (check the article mentioned above), I think it will be much easier for the newcomers. The abolition of the 100-follower requirement piques my interest. They appear to believe that these other modifications will be sufficient to ensure that only high-quality material is monetized, and I hope they are accurate. Bottom line, change is the name of the game on Medium, and this is only the latest in a series of Medium Partner Program improvements. It will be fascinating to observe how this affects the partner program in the long run and how — or if — earnings are significantly impacted in the following weeks and months.

Personally, I am still optimistic. I still admire Medium and what they’re attempting to accomplish with the platform. Is it flawless? No. However, I appreciate that they are working hard to make it a place that prioritizes human-written material and encourages value. That is something to be proud of.
