MEDIUM THINGS

The Medium Community Truly Is Something Else

It’s the reason why I’ve stuck around for as long as I have and will continue to do so

Just like I did a few days ago, many other writers were sharing their news on whether they were accepted or rejected from being part of the Creator Fellowship Program that Medium is rolling out from August until October.

Some were like me where we were invited to apply but were ultimately rejected. Others received their acceptance email and were informed of the minimum guaranteed amount for the next 3 months.

I won’t lie and say that my disappointment didn’t get deeper when I read how some were guaranteed $500 while some up to even $1,000!

For someone like me, that’s a lot of money for the next 3 months and for the majority of writers on the platform, getting even close to that amount is like a dream. As you all know, less than 7% of active writers on this platform make even $100 each month.

That says a lot. It’s also why the ones who were rejected are really feeling the disappointment — some going as far as to contemplate whether they should still continue writing on the platform or not.

I’ll be honest, that thought did slip through my mind for a while.

But today, I was reminded why I won’t be leaving this platform anytime soon and it’s because of all you wonderful people out there — the Medium community that I’ve come to know and love.

When I wrote the article below about how I wasn’t accepted into the Fellowship program, I wanted to just voice out my thoughts and feelings on it for a bit but to also assure my readers that it won’t get me down for too long.

Of course, at that time, I haven’t read about all the minimum guaranteed amount that some of those who were accepted, were being offered.

Although I knew that $200 was the starting amount and that it could be higher, I wasn’t really expecting for it to go all the way up to $1,000. And that’s just from what I know. There may even be writers who were offered a higher minimum guarantee.

As someone who makes about $200 and more every month, I told myself that it’s OK but knowing that I could have potentially been offered a much higher amount, obviously, I felt a little down.

But when I saw the notifications on people commenting on that article, I went to check it out and what I received has been nothing short of amazing.

One of my favourite writers on here, Evelyn Martinez is one of those who was accepted into the program and I couldn’t be happier for her. She deserves it and more because she’s a talented writer but more importantly, a really good person.

And because she’s such a good person, she’s been so supportive of me since the very beginning and she continues to do so. Her words of encouragement whenever I feel down is wonderful to have.

And it’s not just her but so many others as well.

Words of encouragement from those who were accepted, rejected, and not even getting an invite, came in one after another.

It’s what I love most (after being able to earn money) about this platform.

It’s that sense of community. Everyone is just part of a big family and supportive of one another regardless of race, religion, nationality, background, sexual orientation, etc. and it’s beautiful.

Of course you do have the assholes on here as well who leaves nasty comments just for the sake of it but they’re nothing more than attention seekers who may be miserable with their own lives.

And they’re but a minority on the platform.

The majority are nice, caring, and good-hearted people. And I know that my readers, fellow writers, and followers are all of that.

It’s why I’ve been able to stick around for as long as I have and why I will keep sticking around for as long as I can.

Medium isn’t just a writing/reading platform but it’s also a community where everyone CAN and DO belong. It’s what makes it one of the best platforms to be on right now as a writer and a reader.

And although I am still a little disappointed at not being accepted into the Fellowship program, I know that I have the support I need to eventually get to a point where financially, I’m making what I aim to make on a monthly basis, even without a guaranteed minimum from Medium.

At the end of the day, the success and failure of a writer is not only depended on the writer him/herself but also the readers and the company he/she has.

Right now, I’m in the company of amazing people because of the many communities that are on Medium. And it’s because of you wonderful people that I know I will bounce back from this disappointment and go on to be an even better writer.

So, thank you. Thank you from the bottom of my heart, for all the amazing support that you have given to me. It’s definitely more than this small-time writer can ever ask for.
