The Man Who Rode 124 Miles By Bus Holding His Head In Place To Seek Treatment For A Broken Neck
After suffering a serious injury shortly after visiting his mother, a Georgia man took an unusual journey to reach the doctors he trusted in 1948
A broken neck is a very serious injury. There’s no two ways around it. As something that can cause paralysis, death or any number of complications in between, anyone with the misfortune of suffering from this must have it attended to immediately. That’s what makes the case of Ervin Carlisle so unusual. The Atlanta, Georgia man was in an automobile accident when he broke his neck in Alabama and calmly boarded a bus, cradling his head in hands, and rode 124 miles back home so he could be seen by doctors in his local hospital.
The very unusual story of Carlisle garnered interest around the country. The August 17, 1948 issue of The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported how the 36-year-old man, who was a machinist with Southern Railway, was driving in his car near Phenix City, Alabama on August 1st, returning home from visiting his mother. Before he could get there, he was involved in a serious accident. Fearing that he had broken his neck, and what might happen if he wasn’t treated by doctors soon, he decided to go to the doctors he knew best. He feared going to the local rural hospital would not give him the kind of care he needed. Accordingly, he immediately boarded a bus bound for Atlanta, carefully supporting his head with his hands to avoid further injury.
Carlisle later acknowledged that the voyage was “endless over crooked roads,” and that he “prayed to God that I be allowed to live long enough to reach Atlanta.”
Finally reaching his destination, the stricken man was admitted to Grady Hospital in Atlanta. He was carefully positioned on his back with his neck and head placed in a large brace to restrict movement. Doctors listed his condition as serious.
Details that emerged made the story even more incredible. Witnesses later indicated that the accident occurred when the wheel fell off of Carlisle’s car, sending his vehicle spinning around the road where it was struck by another. Carlisle was thrown from the car and was unconscious for more than five hours. After he indicated his intent to go home for treatment, local police threatened to arrest him until he had been checked out by their doctors, but that still didn’t dissuade him, and he was able to go on his way.
Fortunately, Carlisle’s condition continued to improve until he was able to go home. Even though his story feel out of the newspapers after the initial shocking details were reported, it appears that he lived until 1969 when he passed away at the age of 57.
