The Magic Box Against Writer’s Block
Sometimes when writing, you come to a point where it doesn’t seem to go any further. This is called writer’s block, and sometimes a writer’s block lasts for weeks. But that doesn’t have to be because there’s always something in the magic box.
Writing blocks have many causes, and there are just as many tips on how to overcome them. I’ve never known this problem myself.
Of course, there are also moments when everything comes to a standstill during writing. But I won’t let it stop me. Never make the mistake of overrating such a short phase, because only when you do will the small temporary problem become a big one.
Don’t tell yourself you have writer’s block
The concept of writer’s block exists only in your head. If it doesn’t live there, it doesn’t exist anywhere. But if you feed this concept by always saying to yourself: I have a writer’s block, then you will behave as if you really did.
It’s essential to understand this before you use the magic box. If you are convinced that you really have writer’s block, you will not be able to open the box.
So now get this straight: writer’s block is not a real thing. It is the wrong name for a whole series of small, insignificant problems and only this name makes them big.
What’s the magic box?
The magic box is a tool to tap into your subconscious. I’ll show you how to use this tool below. Now you first have to understand some of the basics.
We humans are not very good at solving creative problems with rational thinking. Writing a book isn’t the same as solving a math problem.
There are no clear rules about what has to happen next in a story. At every point in our story, there are potentially infinite possibilities for what to do next.
The problem with a writer’s block is not that we can’t think of anything, but that nothing we can think of works well enough.
How can we know whether the path that comes to our mind is the best one for the progress of history?
The answer is, we can’t. And we don’t have to.
Yes, really: We don’t need to find the perfect next sentence for our story, because what it is doesn’t result from what we have already written, but from how the story continues.
The magic box helps us to take the next small step and thus not get stuck at one point of our story for long. So the concept is speed. By quickly overcoming a problematic spot, we do not lose our momentum and can continue with our book before a small stumbling block can develop into an insurmountable obstacle.
Preparing to open the box
As already mentioned, you must first be aware that your writer’s block is not real, it’s just imaginary.
It may be difficult to admit this to yourself, but always remember: to talk yourself into something is not a disgrace. People do that all day long.
But if you can admit it to yourself, it raises you above the majority of people. It’s not about feeling stupid, but about outgrowing yourself and what you think is possible.
How to use the magic box and overcome writer’s block forever
Now, of course, you finally want to know what this secret, the magical box is all about. What is this thing, and where can it be found?
The magic box exists exactly where your imaginary writer’s block exists: Only in your imagination. And it’s not just in the same place as your writer’s block, but it follows the same rules.
Your writer’s block’s working because you think it’s there. That’s precisely how the magic box works once you believe it exists. Let’s open the box for the first time and see what’s inside.
The first thing you need is a problem you want to solve. Take the manuscript or article you are working on and look at the sentence you last wrote.
Now ask yourself what you could write next at this point, but do it differently than you would typically do.
Now comes the hour of the magic box. Close your eyes and imagine a treasure chest, or a gift box, or anything that symbolizes a magic box for you.
This box is closed. You know this box contains every possible way your story could go on. As long as it’s locked, you don’t know any of those possibilities.
Now imagine this box is wise. Once you open it, there will be something in it that tells you how to move on. All the millions of possibilities that confuse and paralyze you shrink into a single option as soon as you open this box.
There’s only one idea that’s gonna jump out at you.
Know there’s always something in the box. And it’s still just one thing. Not two, not ten, not a million — only one. And this one thing tells you how your story or article has to go on.
But what if I don’t like what I find?
It can happen at the beginning that the content of the box seems absurd or stupid to you. Use what you found anyway. The alternative would be to keep staring at a white sheet of paper. Use it and see where it takes you.
I promise you it will definitely lead you further than the fear of writer’s block ever could.
The content of the box has the purpose of getting you to continue writing. Because once you keep writing your story, it can grow and grow great. It can’ if you keep the box closed.
Look in your magic box. There’s always something in it. It’ll always help you move on.
Have confidence, be curious, and write a new chapter in your creative life.
