The look of Jacques

Jacques was a Chilean with French ancestry who came to Brazil in 70s. Here he met Bela, a southern Brazilian. They fell deeply in love and decided to come to the south of Minas and build a new life here. They were young, beautiful, intellectual and talented teachers. With a vast curriculum, they soon found their place at the university where they served not only as professors, but also as lecturers, always engaged in all departments and subjects. They ended up becoming the symbol of the couple full of charm. Very soon Jacques and Bela became the subject of the moment.
Being so especial it was not surprising that they made many friends. And everyone who frequented their apartment did not leave without an interesting fact or story that could range from their intense relationship to the sophisticated decor of the dining room. Quickly, details of the life of Jacques and Bela were known by the local society. Some people even said that the dining room had a Persian rug bought in Kashan, on a trip they had made to Iran. People also dared to say that the couple had been seen making love on the balcony, something daring for a quiet city in the 70s. Nothing was ever proven, but the truth is the couple was really eccentric.
Well, among Jacques and Bela’s friends there were three young woman who were often invited to dinners and snacks offered by the couple. Michele was one of them. Newly divorced, still very young, the girl owed nothing to the boldness of the Jacques. She herself had been very brave when facing the society of that time, scandalized by her divorce. Well, Michele never got tired of admiring the way Jacques looked at Bela. It was the look of a man definetely in love. Desperately in love. Any gesture of Bela was enough, if she smiled, if she said something. Jacques just forgot the world around him and looked at Bela in an almost hypnotized way, devotedly. Bela was his queen.
One night Michele left the house of Jacques and went to her mother’s. She sighed deeply and confided: Mom, I want to meet another man, but he has to be special. I want a man who looks at me just like Jacques looks at Bela. And her mother, as a good friend, said: you will find him, dear!
Soon after that Michelle met Guilherme, a mature, older and charming man. One day Michele took her boyfriend for her mother to know him. Mrs Ema observed carefully the wonderful couple and as soon as Guilherme said goodbye, she told her daughter: Go ahead dear, because you have found the special man you were looking for. Guilherme looks at you exactly as Jacques looks at Bela. I’m sure.
One day Jacques and Bela left the city and they were never heard from again. It is not known if they are still together or if Jacques still looks devoutly at Bela. Michele was very happy with Guilherme. And from that time on, a new code was established forever between friends and acquaintances, like a test to know if the guy was desperately in love or not: “Does he look at you the way Jacques looked at Bela?”
This look of Jacques cannot be missed, unless you are content with a mere marriage.
