The Long Way

Is Beautiful

Sometimes I take the long way to work…and home again. I live in a beautiful valley.

Driving over the freeway on Cove Avenue in La Grande Oregon instead of under it on Island Avenue allows me to see the far off mountains behind the little town of Union Oregon and the foggy marsh between the mountains and me. Sometimes the fog makes me feel like I am above the clouds.

Ladd Marsh is a treasure I live near but didn’t know about for the first 2 years after I moved here. The variety of ducks and the geese enjoying the water next to the Highway 230 road boggle my mind. The elk, deer, eagles, birds of prey and even the cranes out here within a 15 minute drive from my home is astonishing. Skunks!! I almost forgot about the skunks! They are plentiful and very fragrant during the spring. On a walk along a marsh trail last autumn we had to turn around and get out of the way of a mama skunk and her three little ones! We were in their territory and we certainly didn’t want to alarm them! They were adorable but we knew not to stick around or try and pass them!

I love looking at the mountains here in the Grande Ronde Valley. The sky over the mountains can look so different all throughout the day. Sometimes the clouds are low with a little bit of snow at the top. It amazes me to witness the beauty in textures, colors, shapes and layers of clouds. It’s all so intriguing. It’s wonderful to only be a 10–15 minute drive from a mountaintop.

On a warm fall day here in the valley I can look up and see snow at the top of Mount Emily. And in the winter it is covered in snow. The dark colored pine trees covered in snow look like they have a layer of frost.

I’ve noticed in some areas of town, like on my way down from the hospital, if I drive a block or two over from my normal route, I’ll get a different view of Mount Emily…it can be breathtaking…even when I’m looking through the powerlines.

The road to the top of Mount Emily is only about a 15 minute drive. My car doesn’t like the steep gravel road, but it sure is worth the drive! The walking and mountain bike trails are kept up so it is easy to enjoy the beautiful mountain!

I lived in Elgin for a few years. When I would drive to and from La Grande, I always felt as if I was driving inside of a picturesque puzzle scene. I even told friends I felt as if I lived in a puzzle.

This valley agrees with me…I love living here. I even love when the freeway gets closed during the winter…I feel like I live in a little piece of heaven where everything slows down and life is calmer.

Life here is good. When I look for beauty, I find it.
