The Lie I Tell Myself Constantly

Why what you believe to be true is ‘fake news

I was watching the TV show LAPD S.W.A.T.

I’m on season 2 and am loving every minute of it. I live for any crime dramas. SVU is my jam.

Hondo(the unit sergeant) was off with a friend traveling through Arizona in this episode. He was in his civilian clothing and got pulled over by a white cop who seemed to have a specific agenda with the two black inhabitants of the vehicle.

Of course, Hondo picks up on this right away.

He doesn’t let the officer know he’s a cop to see how far this goes, except his friend has other plans, and quickly tells the officer that Hondo is a cop before this escalates past the officer opening his trunk and badgering him with questions.

Once the officer heard that Hondo was a cop, he quickly changed his tune.

Let’s fast forward to the end of the show, where Hondo catches up with the officer to try and get him to admit that race was why he pulled him over. I didn’t understand the play here as most racist people don’t openly admit they have an issue, much less say so to the opposite race in the same uniform.

No surprise, it’s very much implied that this officer has an objection to his skin tone. He never admits to why he pulled him over other than he made an aggressive lane change.

The scene changes to Hondo sitting in a hotel room with a lady he is dating, talking about the incident. He’s so angry because these situations still occur, and he only was saved due to his position. He admitted wanting to kick the cop’s ass but knew he couldn’t, as his friend said, “You would just justify his feelings by letting the thug come out.”

The way I thought about it was that Hondo can’t focus on what he can’t control. You can’t control how others feel about you or a particular group. Trying to do so will drive you insane. And you can’t let what others think have a massive impact on your emotions and behaviors.

We believe someone should like us when they don’t. The truth is, that’s on them, not us.

We can’t continue playing the victim when these things happen as nobody owes us a damn thing.

And that, in part, is the lie I tell myself.

“I deserve this.”

Yes, I deserve a lot of things. The question becomes, did I put in the work to get it?

We deserve to be in healthy relationships. Did we put the work in to build it?

We deserve to get clients consistently. Did we put in the effort to attract them?

Everything we deserve is being given to us at this very moment.

There is a saying that you are a combination of all the decisions that you have made so far.

If you are having an issue with where your life is, start making different decisions to get what you think you deserve.

Let’s all stop lying to ourselves about what we deserve.
