The Letter To The Sailor

Dear Sailor Boy

When I wrote this letter to my ten-year-old son, as requested by the school for his fifth-grade sleepover trip to the ship, tears rolled down my eyes because I knew that the next several years would take us away from what he called home. Five years later, as he creates and executes the action plan to move back home overseas, I look at his tall posture and determined green eyes, and cry again. Soon, he will depart on a big white metallic bird with this letter in his pocket. A little too soon.

My dear sailor boy!

As the night spreads its wings over the sleepy citizens of our town, I am burning a candle in my room, thinking of you on the other side of the sea. Although you are miles away from home, and I cannot talk to you, ruffle your hair, or kiss your cheek, it doesn’t matter to me at all. I’d like to invite you to a dream ride! The dreams don’t know the time or distance. In them, we are always present and together: holding hands, arguing, conversing, sharing life, and having joy. Close your eyes and let’s take off!

Imagine a beautiful faraway land with red brick cottages, gardens full of bright flowers, and sandy castles in the backyards. Somewhere in that land, there is a round-shaped yellow house with a large squeaking gate and myriad of grand windows, which are hiding under green and blue curtains. The large patio behind the house is extended into the beach shore, bathing in occasional waves of high sea tide. In the middle of the patio, there is a big wooden table with games, books, and multiple dishes of tasty home-made food. Smiles and sunshine rays are hovering over the table, like a rainbow cloud. Many people from all walks of life have gathered at that table to enjoy each other company, to recharge and regain energy, and to love and accept each other.

One handsome dark-haired young man with deep green eyes particularly stands out among those people. As he cares for everyone with confident gestures, he leads the conversation at the table, shares his complex, but beautiful life experiences with the guests, and ensures that they express their deepest thoughts and feelings. The guests listen to his wisdom and respect his will. He is a well-known football player and a theater/movie director. In this house, however, he is, first and foremost, the host and the leader. That young man is you, my darling sailor! Those people around the table are us, our relatives and friends. That house and that land is our home.

The young man of the future, who lives in you now, will always be my sailor boy. Tonight, I would like to give him a message. Can you do it for me, please?

Tell him that I love his protective spirit, his enormous love and desire to have his family around him, his decision to commit to the one girl he loves, and to pursue his dreams, as scary as they may seem. Tell him that this boy is brilliant, and even if he may not have the most spectacular grades in school right now, he is an incredible student of life itself, which is far more important in a long run. Tell this boy that I am and always will be tremendously proud of him for being authentic, for staying strong in what he believes in, for taking risks and proving the odds wrong, by achieving things which others before him didn’t dare to try, similar to great adventurers of all times. And I want him to know that I love him forever and more, regardless, of which path he decides to take between now and this dream, or even beyond it.

When your dad found out that I am writing a letter to you, he asked me to add to it that he begs this boy to face the challenges and conquer all of his fears, because he believes in this boy and his power wholeheartedly. He believes in you!

Tell me about your trip, my little man! Is the life on the ship as exhilarating, as you imagined it to be? How is your crew? Did you make any friends yet? Did you learn anything new? I imagine you sitting on the deck under the starry skies and listening to the captain’s grand stories of human accomplishments and trials. Are you ready to become the captain of your destiny ship one day? Will you call your ship “The Awesome Shots”? Will you take me traveling on that ship and show me the unknown sights of your Universe? I am already packed and can’t wait to be on board, my darling explorer!

Today — where I go, you go. Tomorrow — where you go, I go. We are on this journey together for a lifetime: in the actual life and our dream.

I miss you, my sailor boy!

Love,

Mama
