The Leaf Sweeper

What was the Universe showing me?

The trees are all naked now here on the Great Plains of Turtle Island. A super deep freeze near the beginning of the month quick froze everything and numerous subsequent windstorms have denuded the trees leaving gargantuan piles of dried leaves in drifts on the ground.

This situation provides opportunity for extreme fun, as I wrote about in my article, Cowboy Boots. But it also has provided an opportunity for me to witness mindless insanity. Allow me to explain…

Yesterday afternoon while the wind was howling with destructive ferocity I looked out the window and noticed a woman down the block sweeping leaves off of the sidewalk in front of her house. Was she nuts?

She started at one end of the sidewalk sweeping the leaves off the sidewalk. When she got to the other end of the sidewalk she turned around to see that the wind had blown all the leaves back onto the sidewalk. So she proceeded to head back towards the other end of the sidewalk, once again sweeping all the leaves off the sidewalk. When she got to the other side she turned around to see that the wind had blown all the leaves back onto the sidewalk.

Believe it or not, this woman went back and forth sweeping the leaves off her sidewalk for forty-five minutes. The wind kept blowing the leaves back onto the sidewalk and she kept sweeping them off only for the wind to blow them back onto the sidewalk. She finally tired of it and went indoors. The sidewalk looked just as covered with leaves as when she started sweeping. All of her effort was a complete waste of time.

Some people say that our outer environment reflects our inner environment. Other people say that what happens in our outer environment has messages for us from the Universe. Watching the absurdity of the woman sweeping leaves in a windstorm I could not help but wonder what the Universe was trying to show me.
