The Last Week in my Dad’s House that Almost Killed me, and my Uncle

Thank God for homeless people

My family lived in a house we were renting in Pinellas Park Florida. A few years after my mom died, the house next door went up for sale.

My dad wasted no time at all. He bought the house next door. It was an easy move. We hauled our stuff next door. It was a nice house with a beautiful backyard.

Once I started getting the bills, I understood why

Before we moved in, my dad made me swear that when he died, I was to sell the house and find a cheaper place to live. Two weeks after he died. I started getting bills for utilities and mortgage payments.

I called a Realtor and listed my dad’s house. It took a few months, but I sold the house. I needed to find another place to live and in a hurry.

My uncle didn’t want to live in an apartment

After looking at several apartments in my price range, we decided to look at trailer parks. I found a place, now it was a matter of finding a buyer for dad’s house.

The Realtor found a buyer, we also had to have the will probated. I was sleeping the afternoon when we got the call. I was supposed to work that night.

It was a lot of work to get out of that house

My uncle woke me up late that afternoon. We had four days to get out of a three-bedroom house, with a Florida Room and a two-car garage.

I called my supervisor and took a week off. My uncle and I then started packing. The next day, I rented a truck and the first of three storage units.

The Homeless couple was a big help

The next morning, a homeless couple approached my uncle. They offered to help us move if we paid them. I had them on the spot. They were a big help, and they probably saved our lives.

I closed on the sale of the house, then I had to go to the trailer park to close on the dump I bought. I didn’t get there in time to get the electricity turned on.

A long sweltering weekend

My uncle and I spent our first weekend in a trailer in early summer in Florida, with no air conditioning. The previous residents left without notice because they had warrants for their arrest. They left all their furniture, that was a good thing.

We survived the weekend, the neighbor on one side of us was gone, but she had a housesitter. He liked to sit outside and drink beer all night with a radio playing full-blast.

my uncle and I settled in, we were content to stay in the trailer park, but fate had other plans.
