Summary

The website content discusses the author's journey in incorporating the sense of smell into their self-care routine, acknowledging it as the last sense they learned to nurture.

Abstract

The article titled "The Last Sense" under the #DecemberSelfCare series delves into the often overlooked aspect of self-care: the sense of smell. The author reflects on how they have methodically addressed other senses in their self-care practices, such as decluttering for visual appeal, experimenting with tastes on a budget, finding comfort in favorite textures like sweaters, and integrating music for auditory pleasure. However, it was only recently that the author allowed themselves to indulge in olfactory delights, such as using luxurious soaps and shampoos, and surrounding themselves with pleasant aromas through wax melts and scented candles. The piece emphasizes the importance of scent in completing the self-care experience and invites others to explore the sense of smell in their own routines.

The Last Sense

Poetry & Self-Care Prompt: the sense of smell

Photo by Marta Filipczyk on Unsplash

in building my self-care scent was the last sense I learned to take care of.

on the visual front you learn quickly to declutter choose visually appealing arrangements even if you don’t quite have the budget for visual art.

in tastes, you can find the most exciting, adventurous experiences with a simple dash of budget soy sauce or a simple 3-ingredient recipe.

in touch, I’ve always had my favourite sweaters the ones that just felt better than all the other clothes

and in sound music has always been an integral part

but only recently did I give myself permission to use those expensive gifted soaps, shampoos to splurge on budget wax melts to make my hair smell nice to make my surroundings smell like a dessert.

the combo is complete.

Lucy (The Eggcademic) [she/her] didn’t really discover this side of self-care and treating herself until she really settled down to live with herself. It’s definitely a harder one to do because some people are more sensitive to scents so it’s good to be mindful of sensory sensitivities. At home, living alone though, she reigns as Queen of Deciding What Food-Scented Candle She’s Going To Use Next.

What’s next… another piece that deserves more love from Jay Avery or something else I wrote?
