In war, whichever side may call itself the victor, there are no winners, but all are losers. — Neville Chamberlain
The final bell had rung some time ago, but that didn’t stop the right hooks from finding my bruised and battered face, stars circling around like vultures biding their time. What had started off as a sparring match, quickly turned into an incident of regrettable proportions. The ring floor shook violently upon impact, and for a moment I forgot where I was. The truth is, I stopped swinging after the first round, when I let my guard down and your words struck me like a knee to the groin. They always packed a punch, but this time around the force was enough to take the fight right out of me. And here you are, standing victorious over limp body, arms raised in the air, the last one standing in a contest where there are no winners.
As always, a huge THANK YOU for taking the time to read my poem. Without you, my voice would be a soft whisper just floating in the air.
