The Last of Us episode 1 makes me want to go back to 2003

If you ever heard of The Last of Us you might be thinking more along the line of the 2013 game that you could play on the playstation, but this version I am talking about is the 2023 that premiered on the formerly known HBO Max now titled Max.

The reason I bring up the episode in particular is that the first 5 and a half minutes features a flashback to 2003 and then the episode switches back to present day 2023 20 years later.

That brief flashback to 2003 I loved every minute of it, but my favorite part of the whole flashback was the Nokia aka brick phone Joel took out of his pocket.

He had a cool plastic cover to go over the phone. The phone was known as the brick phone because it had great durability.

In the show Joel worked in construction dealing with the concrete in particular that is what gave this phone greater purpose as he was working in a job with heavy duty tools and so that phone would’ve been the best option for his line of work.

The Nokia phone

They were widely acclaimed for their time and sold over 100 million units worldwide.

But you are probably wondering okay that is cool they were popular back in the prime years when they first came out, but why the obsession with a phone that is over 20 years old.

Well to me it took me back to a time that was much simpler as back when the first iPhone came out I was still in elementary school and I did not receive a cell phone until I was in fifth grade and it was nothing near a smartphone as I remember getting a tracfone I don’t remember the exact version of the phone if it was a flip phone or if it was the version that looked like a blackberry with a keypad, but the phone was very simple and had little games and a browser.

I do remember that as I got older I switched to an android smartphone that had a plan through AT&T this was when I was in middle school.

The point though is that the first phones I had were much simpler and did not have all the bells and whistles that a smartphone had; they were cheap and effective

. That is my main reason that I was a bit nostalgic when seeing the phone the character was using in the show because it reminded me of a much simpler time before iPhones and before I even had a smartphone myself.

Don’t get me wrong I love the new phones as they are becoming more convenient with even more features being added on to the phone, but there is a point in all of this which is that the simpler phones were more economically feasible for people to buy versus the iPhone with the latest iPhone 15 pro max costing $1,199 this price is what will bring the old phones back I feel.

The Nokia was brought back

2017 version of Nokia 3310

The Nokia 3310 was brought back in 2017 with a few modifications, a bigger and better display and is also much lighter in weight. This gives Nokia a possible chance to make a comeback in a market that is dominated by smartphones.

Although I feel you should have at least one smartphone it is always great to have a backup phone that is like the Nokia for emergencies maybe.

The Last of Us

Back to that opening in the pilot, it was what made the show in my opinion and I feel that there is a few throwbacks like the Nokia phone and DVDs along with the dvd players that is enough to send someone on a trip back to memory lane.

Did you ever feel nostalgic about watching a show or movie that was based in a period of the past and do you feel that older versions of phones that were simpler should be brought back for the new generations of phone owners?
